Tried to follow certain threads to clear the "www.winfixer.com" popup without success... I must be missing an obvious stage. Have installed CCleaner, Ewido Security Suite 3.5, Silent Runners, HiJackThis, Killbox, Trojan Hunter. Attempted a fix in Safe mode without success.

Here's my HiJackThis log to get things started - your help would be gratefully appreciated.

REBOOT TO SAFE MODE
  • Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as BIOS.
  • As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
  • Continue to do so until the 'Windows Advanced Options' menu appears.
  • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the menu item - Safe Mode.

Close all open programs
Double click L2mfix.bat
Select option #2 - Run Fix - by typing 2
Press any key to reboot your computer.
After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, you will be presented with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it here, along with a new HJT log.

Please Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are told to

Return to Normal Mode and post your L2MeFix log and a New HJT log for one of our Security Members to look at.

Welcome back. Following below are instructions to remove products that I feel should not be trusted. It is your choice if you choose to keep these products, but I have left my reasons below.

Save the next instructions in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then. You should not have any browsers on.

If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!. .

Please download these additional files/programs. Do not run them unless instructed to do so.
Unless otherwise stated, they should be stored in same directory as the HiJackThis program.

Please download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Do not run it yet

Unplug your computer from the Internet when you have finished downloading

REBOOT TO SAFE MODE
  • Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as BIOS.
  • As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
  • Continue to do so until the 'Windows Advanced Options' menu appears.
  • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the menu item - Safe Mode.

Enable the viewing of Hidden files
  • From Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options>View tab.
  • Enable the option for `Show hidden files and folder´
  • Disable the option for `Hide file extensions for known types´
  • Disable the option for `Hide protected operating system files´
  • Click Yes to confirm & then click OK
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Click Start>Run - type services.msc.
Locate the Aluria Spyware Eliminator Service (ASEService) service and double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
Click the Stop button.
In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.
Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.

Then start HiJackThis & go to Config>Misc.Tools...> Delete an NT service...
In the popup box that appears, type in ASEService & click the OK button.

Uninstall the following programs, if present, using Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs : Netzip, Real Download, Netscape Smart Download - http://editor.actrix...rticle/spyw.htm
Microsoft AntiSpyware
Aluria Spyware Eliminator

Both the above programs are considered 'rogueware'. Rogue/Suspect means that these products are of unknown, questionable, or dubious value as anti-spyware protection. Neither of these products can be trusted as they are affiliated with adware companies and products. Microsoft Antispyware is known to ignore 180Solutions, WhenU, New.net, eZula, TopText and Webhancer. I recommend uninstalling them.

Completed the process ... loaded Panda software - however ended up with conflicts with Panda and my other software Zone Alarm & Norton Anti-Virus - uninstalled Panda - now the system locks up once I reboot... i.e loads Win XP SP1... then freezes - I can't get any response from the 'Start' button or programs on the Taskbar . Here's my HiJackThis log from this morning ...

Prior to loading the Panda software, I noticed a considerable improvement in the performance of the pc especially boot-up and opening programs/web pages.

So we're close...

It's nver a good idea to have more then one AV installed. It was good you removed one.. Personally, I would have removed Norton, but it's your choice.. Sicne you uninstalled Panda, we need to remove the associated services. Please do the following:

Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for Panda Process Protection Service (PavPrSrv) and double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled. Do the same for: Panda anti-virus service (PAVSRV)

Run HJT and fix these:

There isn't anything in your HJT log that suggests malicious. I'll need you to run a Virus scan, you can use Norton if you like - but I'd prefer if you did an online virus scan:

Do an online scan at one of the following sites:Take note the names and locations of any file it detects but fails to clean.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Create a new System Restore point
    • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
    • select the System Restore Tab
    • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
    • click Apply
    • then untick the same checkbox & click OK
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety
  • IE/Spyad - IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

  • MVPS Hosts file - The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer

  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • Weather Watcher - Free taskbar weather program that is free, malware free, and resource light.

  • Firefox - Use this alternate browser. Whilst Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • Google Toolbar - Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

  • Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol.
A tutorial for this product is located here > Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

After doing all these, your system will be optimised against future threats.
