Hi guys,

I was browsing the net and I guess clicked on something I shouldn't have, because me screen turned red with an insert ad for malware protection; and AVG indicated dropper.agent virus. I also have Adaware, Spybot, and CWS shredder installed as well, and after running all of these and clearing my java cache, I am coming up clean on all tests. The problem now is that my desktop image is no longer visable except for a brief glimpse when rebooting. Instead I get a white screen that goes white and gray. The other problem is that my internet explorer now opens automatically on reboot, and tries to dial a connection, even though cable is available. When I was running all the tests, I also found all kinds of spyware that seemed to come from the same website, as they were not there before. Maybe there was more damage done on my machine then I thought. I appreciate any help you can offer. I am running Windows XP Pro on an IBM R51. Thank You.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted

HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if the main link does not work) and install it.

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

open Hijackthis and do a scan. Please check off the following items:

Excal,

I did everything you said in the order you listed. Internet Explorer no longer loads by itself on startup, but my desktop is still going white/grey. I tried going to display and when I chose "desktop," it said there was none chosen. I then chose one and nothing happened. I then rebooted the machine, and still the same white/grey desktop. Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Next go to Control Panel click appearance and themes>click Display > Desktop Tab> click Customize Desktop > Web tab > Uncheck anthing in there if present.

Great job, it appears your computer is clean

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment


Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware


If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Included in those updates is Windows XP Service Pack 2. Click Here
Since you're junkware free, the time to get it is NOW. Service Pack 2 is a MAJOR upgrade for XP. It adds numerous security and software patches, as well as new features and functionality. You will also be adding another layer of protection against future threats.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot
