Man, where do I start? I've read through the several posts regarding the missing wininet.dll file, and have tried to deal with the problem a bit, but I need some really experienced help now. Things have progressed to the point my machine is near unoperable.

I have Windows ME. At start up (when Windows will actually boot) I get the missing file notification: wininet.dll. It all started when my screen at boot up said I was infected with a Bloodhound virus.

This has caused Ad Aware to be inoperable, even on a new install. My Norton subscription just ran out, too, and also is currently not running at all (Maybe because of me doing some selective start-up). So I haven't downloaded AVG yet because I read you should not run two virus programs, but I guess I'm currently running none, so please advise.

Ewido says I need Windows 2000 or later.

To get to the point I am now - a Safe Mode look to my screen and Windows actually booting up - I've turned off "Process Wini file" in selective start up. With a normal start up Windows often will not even boot up. I figure Process Wini turned off is keeping programs like Norton and Ad Aware from running, but like I said, it at least got me here. Even before I did a selective start up, Ad Aware would not run since I got this bug. Also, while Norton was still running, a scan found nothing.

I can boot into Safe Mode but be aware I have no mouse control and have to navigate via the keyboard. I know some of the key commands to do that, like Alt+f for file, but certainly not all of them.

I use Firefox because IE stopeed working a LONG time ago. Good riddance.

Oh, and my D: and E: drives don't work. Actually, if you can help me get those working so I can back-up some recent, critical files I MUST have, then the heck with it, I'll format my hard drive - it would probably be easier in the long run. But I can't burn anything right now and a reformat is out of the question until I can save some files. I tried saving some to an online folder, but the larger ones lock my machine up.

So, sorry for the long winded intro, but I wanted to try to give you plenty of information. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

P.S. I've had a bug or two before, but what ever I have now is especially malicious.

Here's my HJT file:

Hi, and thank you.

Yes, still having serious issues. I tried reinstalling ME with the option to save my last system files, and "Winsu" I think it was, thwarted my attempt.

Here's my latest log:

OK, after pasting that and submitting it where you asked, this is the response:

"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file"

I figured that much, because that file is missing. I do see that my Norton no longer has a red "X" through it. Perhaps that is because of the file you asked me to check off.

Spybot will run OK, but when I try to run Ad Aware I get this message:

"The AD-AWARE.EXE file is linked to missing export WININET.DLL:FindNextUrlCacheEntryExA." <--- Just like that.

When I tell people I have Win ME, they cringe.

I cringe too....lol

Copy everything in the box below and paste it into notepad. Go up to "File > Save As..." and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as wininet.bat on your desktop.

dir %Systemdrive%\wininet.dll /a h /s > files.txt
start notepad files.txt

Double click wininet.bat and when it is ready it will open files.txt
Copy the content of files.txt and paste it here.

When I double clicked that .bat file, a DOS window opened up, and a Notepad window opened on top of it.

The Notepad window, "files.txt" is blank.

The DOS window reads:

C:\WINDOWS\Desktop>dir \wininet.dll /a h /s > files.txt
Too many paramaters - h

C:\WINDOWS\Desktop>start notepad files.txt

I'm sorry, can you do this first before running that .bat.

If you use Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2K, go to My Computer->View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show all files' is checked under the 'Hidden Files' section. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside 'Hide file extensions for known file types'.

thanks,

:tazz:

Thank you for helping me out, btw.

On my machine the hidden files option path is: My Compter/Tools/Folder Options/View ... then once view is selected I can choose to 'show hidden files' and check or not check 'Hide file extensions for known file types'.

The selections you requested were already set like that before I ran the .bat file. I can run the .bat again if you like.

Also, I think we're getting close. I still get the missing wininet.dll file message, but I do now have my desktop settings back to normal, my D: and E: drive are working again, and Norton no longer has a red 'X' through it.

ok lets fix that error :)

Now comes the tricky part. Make sure you follow these instructions to a T. Do not deviate from them at all, if you do, bad things may happen. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them before you start the fix :)

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Please go to start>my computer then navigate to this file:

C:\Windows\System\wininet.dll

right click on it and rename it to wininet.old

go to your C:\ (its actually in C drive, not in a folder), right click on the wininet.dll present there, choose copy and paste it in your system-folder.

Reboot

Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Windows\System\wininet.old

please post and let me know the results.

Thanks,

:tazz:

Would you please elaborate/help me out on the..."C:\ (its actually in C drive, not in a folder) right click on the wininet.dll present there"...part.

When I rename it "old" does it then show up on C:? Because right now there is no file NOT in a folder on C:

Please feel free to ask anymore questions so there isn't a problem at start up. Sorry its confusing, trying to explain it the best I can. :)

there is a seperate wininet.dll in the C:drive, the path looks like this C:\wininet.dll.
this is a good one and the one I need you to copy.

The one you renamed will stay in the system folder, just will have a diffrent extension at the end (will be .old now)

I'm still skeptical about that .dll file being right on the C: drive because I've never noticed it before, but maybe that's because I didn't always show the hidden files.

I'll reply back as soon as I can. I'm at work at the moment... Hopefully you'll still be around to hear the (hopefully) good news.

Something I hesitate to mention - my Paint program disappeared while in the early throws of the trojan I think I got. Well, it didn't disappear, but when I'd click the icon it would actually launch some internet connection program I don't recall ever having. :tazz: So I deleted the shortcut, and now can't find Paint for the life of me, but that's a secondary issue that may work out after we get the .dll file issue corrected, plus I can always reinstall it....hopefully.

Thank you again for all the help.

A lot of hope here :)
