Duplicate copies of media files out of nowhere

Hello everyone, hopefully you can help me. I have a rather small HD (40GB). I have the usual programs along with some music and videos. however, i checked my drive space to see how much space i had left b/c my computer was running really slow, yet i haven't loaded or downloaded anything at the time (1 day ago). When i checked the space i had 700MB of space left, when 24 hours before i checked it was like 4 gb's or something. I dunno what happened. When i tried to delete some files this error message would show up, "cannot move Dc1: it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." I don't have any other programs using the file. Just my search pane is up. Also, when i tried to search for all the movies on my computer i realized that the computer automatically reproduced copies of them. So i have double the stuff on my computer that i don't need (which is like 6GB's). How do i remove that feature and get only ONE copy? Posted ImageHere is a snapshot of my search screen so see for yourself....(look at the sizes of the files. They are duplicates. I am hiding the names of the files from you guys...cuz u know...privacy....but you'll get the idea:-) ) Anyway, PLEASE HELP.

Welcome to GTG. Must be malware related. Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

okay. here is my Log.

I did a search for all my files in my documents and A LOT of stuff is duplicated, not just media files. Like program files as well. and they are located in weird folders that just spontaneously created.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Reboot your PC.

Reply with the results.

There are many programs that will compare and remove duplicate files, but I'd rather find the source of the problem first. These files may not actuallt be duplicated, but the files system may be corrupted.

Okay, i did the virus scan with trendmicro and nothing came up as well a sthe free trojan scan...nothing.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

Reboot your PC.

My computer seems to be starting up faster than before.

And in regards to the multiple files...kit hink i thought i had multiple files...when there weren't really any.

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. :D
