Good evening - I've tried to follow the steps outlined. I've run Cleanup, Ad-Aware, CW Shredder, Spybot, and started in Ewido. Spybot and Ewido have both stopped in the middle of their scans to reboot the machine. Here's my Hijack This log:

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. This is quite a challenge, no scanning. We’ll have to rely on surgery until we can scan. Looking at your log, I can see the need for at least three scanning programmes. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep. In the next sweep, and I need at least 4, I will have to introduce some scanners; let's hope they work once some of the baddies have gone.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Temporary Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
Revised Nailfix Utility

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find these services one at a time:

System Startup Service (SvcProc)
Command Service (cmdService)

When you find them, double-click on each one. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter each item into that field (copy and paste):

SvcProc
cmdService

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Please install Revised Nailfix Utility , unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on nailfix.exe.
Click "Next" in the setup, then make sure "Run Nailfix" is checked and click "Finish".
Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

3. I found and disabled "Command Service." There was no trace of "System Startup Servcie." When I ran Hijack This, it did not appear when I was "deleting NT services."

4. I installed Nailfix in Safe Mode, as I've been running in SafeMode since this whole thing started. If that's a problem, let me know. When I ran it, and clicked "Finish," my desktop icons disppeared as promised, but I got a dialog box telling me I was running in Safe Mode, that I had to click "Yes" to.

5. I removed all the entries you mentioned in Hijack This, bujt did not find:

8. Killbox may not have run correctly.

Trojan Hunter is reporting Trojans that have already been removed by other programmes, and lying idly in quarantine, in addition to the ones it finds and deletes.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

The VX2 infection on your PC is confirmed.

Close any programmes you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Extra note... after reboot and logging in, normally a screen will pop up and perform the rest of the fix and notepad opens automatically afterwards.
If that doesn't happen, you'll have to do it manually, so open your L2M-folder which is present on your desktop and doubleclick second.bat.
Let it run and notepad (log.txt) will open then. Copy and paste the contents of it in your next reply with a new hijackthislog.

Thanks. Just so you know, when I run LM2Fix, an MSDOS window opens - at the top, it reads, C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe. This concerned me, because I thought I'd eliminated command services. But I went on, and got a window that read,

"A subdirectory or file backregs already exists. You must have an internet connection Active to download strings from systernals. If one is active, then press any key to continue ..." I did so, and got a message box that basiclaly told me that a program called File Downloader was trying to operate, but couldn't (presumably because there was no active internet connection). It told me to press any key, which took me to the main menu. This is how it worked the first time I posted an lm2fix log as well.

Anyway, I ran second.bat manually, as instructed, and received this basic message:

The system cannot find the path specified (x3)
Killing explorere and rundll32.exe
The system cannot find the path specified (x1)

AT the same time, an alert box called "registry editor" pops up that reads,

"Cannot export backregs\E36C2B37-CF48-47DF-8B8g-4B9B7DC12C48.reg. Error opening the file. There may be a disk or folder system error."
So I didn't get an lm2fix log.

I'm doing all this while in Safemode. If I'm in normal mode, the machine tells me it's recovered from serious sytem errors.

I think you have some weird issues on this PC and can't help wondering if doing a SFC would help you.

I just looked at the HJT log and although I can't see the VX2, I know it's there due to lack of confirmation of it going.

However, there is another entry there which normally gets dumped there if a HJT scan is run whilst L2M fix is running.

My advice is, delete the L2M fix you have on your PC, download a fresh copy. Run the #2 or manually click the second bat, go get a coffee and build a house, then check back for the log.

If you want to, I can give you a fix for the rest of the entries I can see, but it would be nothing short of a miracle if your PC was clean afterwards.

How ominous. While LM2Fix is running (not that I'm sure it actually is) and I'm building my house, what's an "SFC"? Do you mean take it into a live fix-it place?

SFC is a System File Checker. Sometimes system files get corrupted and need to be renewed. If you have a Windows CD, it's a good idea to do this. The reason for the suggestion is that you appear to have a few issues, not just malware.

Getting a coffee and building a house in my way of saying, please be patient. Sometimes these scans can be 30 minutes. Since the advent of the 500+ MHz CPU, everybody wants instantaneous results.

The entry in your log, is an indication that L2M is running and was interrupted by HJT doing a scan. HJT sees the programme running in the registry which gives this result.

Let me know if you want to run the SFC.

I ran LM2Fix manually. Dialog box said it couldn't find several paths specified - then it kills explorer.exe and the rundll file as before, says 0 files copied and closes. The desktop goes away and stays away, of course. I let it stay on overnight, but there was no logfile in the morning. Then I ran it from the LM2Fix menu, rebooted, etc., with almost same result (although I only let it run about 40 minutes). In this mode, the desktop does not disappear, though of course the machine reboots - I can't help wondering if rebooting into Safe Mode doesn't interfere with running LM2Fix after reboot.

I would like to use the SFC.

Okay ... I ran HJT and Fixed the files mentioned. When I rebooted in Safe mode, however, none of the files you listed were to be found, even though I made sure I hidden files were visible, etc. I even ran searches to see if I'd missed something. There was a \cfgmgr52.ini file, but no dll.

When I rebooted in normal, I received an error message, saying that it couldn't find cfgmgr52.dll (I didn't receive this error message when I first booted up in normal tonight). And I see the cfgmgr52.dll in the HJT logfile still.

Hello again

We must address the big problem which is VX2, so another quick clean up and then on to SFC.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Reboot normally.

It sounds to me like you have something very wrong with your operating system and I think that should be the focus of your attention.

Since you've had this non-performance, when attempting to run L2MFIX Find, I thought it might be worth just checking over your system files. You'll be glad to hear that there is an automated way in which to do this.

Here's what you do to run the system file checker. Open a command prompt (Start -> Run - type CMD and hit enter). Type in SFC /SCANNOW (note the space after SFC) and hit enter. You'll need your XP disc handy.

This will check all your system files and replace any which are different from the original Microsoft versions.

When this is completed, reboot normally and try to run L2MFIX Find again.

Good evening - Okay, here's what happened:

* Deleted the item mentioned using Hijack This.
* KillBox didn't work. I entered the specified file, but while it's "verifying registry entries," it pops up with an alert box that reads, "PendingFileRename Operations Registry Has been Removed by External Process!" I could only click "OK." It did not reboot, even though I'd checked that option.
* I rebooted normally and ran the SFC. It found at least one file that had to be replaced (after that, I left the CD in the drive).
* I ran LM2Fix again. It seems to actually work in Normal mode, but not in Safe Mode, which is how I've run it in the past. Anyhow, here's my log after running option 1 of LM2Fix:
