[Colleen and Dave]

HI!
My name is Colleen and my husband is Dave. We have been trying to remove winfixer now for two days. We don't know where it came from or what to do to get rid of it. I have even disabled my connection to the internet (I am running a LAN) and firewall and somehow it still turns enables my Internet and everything else.
I haven't ran my highjack on my computer yet as I just got it. But I will.

3. You have the latest version of VX2.

• Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

• Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
  
• Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then OPEN the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
  
• Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #"1" for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter.
  
• This will scan your computer and it may appear as if nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, Notepad will open with a log.
  
• Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

It should be a little better after this procedure is completed


Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

• From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing "2" and then pressing ENTER.
  
• Then press any key to reboot your computer.
  
• After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer.
  
• When it's finished, Notepad will open with a log.
  
• Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

I need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes.

• Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
• Click on Options, Settings.
• In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
• Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
• Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
• After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
• Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

• First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
  
  • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
  • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"

Okay, I see you see there is a cuiu.exe here but there wasn't one except in prefetch where there were two.

1. If you want to clean your Prefetch folder, please follow these instructions:

Download: CCleaner

Once installed, run CCleaner click the Windows tab

Select the following:
Internet Explorer:
Temp Internet
History
Recently Typed URLs
Delete Index.dat files

System:
Empty Recycle Bin
Temporary Files
Memory Dumps
Chkdsk File Fragments
Old Prefetch Data

Next: click Options click the Settings tab
Uncheck: "Only delete files older than 48 hrs.", click Ok
Then click Run Cleaner (bottom right) then Exit (reboot)

2. Now run a HJT scan and check to see if C:\WINDOWS\system32\cuiu.exe

is among the running processes in the top half of your log. If it is, try and delete it as previously described. If you can't, please repost a new log and tell me what happened.

I don't know if it worked or not, it really did a good job of cleaning up my files. I really needed the clean-job. My computer has been moving rather slow lately and I didn't know if it was because of all the games I have or what. My husband says that if they aren't open they shouldn't bother my computer.
I notices that by logging off and on on, through reboot, my Anti-Spyware set its setting back to default. So I changed them back to the way you said.
