Did you try the link to download it to your desktop that I gave you in Post #4? Download it from there and install. If it does not install then most likely you have an illegitimate copy of xp and we will not be able to help you.

while trying to update to SP1a i keep getting this error message:

The file c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys is open or in use by another application

Problem is, I dont have any other apps running and I cant find anything in my Processes in Task manager. Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, I think I may have a solution. You will most likely need to either uninstall EZ-CD Creator or just diable it from auto starting. Something is running your atapi.sys file (for your cd rom) and in order to install sp1a you need to not have this file running. Try that and then install it.

-=jonnyrotten=-

I've also read that some have actually deleted the atapi.sys file and then installed. After reboot it is supposedly back. I wouldn't trust that fact, but if you want to try that too make a copy of the file onto some sort of storage and install (without rebooting between deletion and installation) then reboot and see if it's back. If it's not then put it back and reboot. note: do not copy it to cd in case the file does not automatically return and you will not be able to use the cdrom.

Hmm, well if it is in your system tray (very bottom right) try right clicking the icon and go into properties or options (something of that sort) and find where you can stop it from starting with windows. You might have open the program and try tools, options or something like that and do the same thing. Also you might be able to just right click the tray icon and click exit. Then hit ctrl+alt+del and click the processes tab. Look for atapi.sys (probably won't be there anyways but just to make sure) and right click it and end process. Do the same for any files relating to the ezcd creator too.

Don't install SP2 until your system is clean.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Reboot, and try SP1 again.

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN <_<

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

We highly recommend installing SP2. Click here: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.
-or-
It's a very large download, so if you're on dial-up, order a free CD here:
http://www.microsoft...default810.mspx

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. :D
