I had it delete the "isdeleteme"; Uninstalled Norton - Installed Avast

Avast report it did on the initial restart:

08/18/2005 20:43
Scan of all local drives
File C:\hiberfil.sys Error 0xC0000022

am doing the vx2finder now - gotta restart.

Also, we need to restore registry permissions...

Please download l2mfix.exe again from here:

http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #4 for "Restore Registry Permission" then hit enter.

Will you post a new HiJackThis log for me, please, to make sure all Norton remnants are gone? (it's bad about leaving emtpy registry entries behind). :tazz:

It said the l2mfix.exe was already on the machine - I opened the folder and double clicked the l2mfix.bat file and it opened a window with what looked like a greenbackground dos prompt with choices 1-5, and E for exit. #4 was "This is Automatic Now" not "Restore Reigstry Permission" Please advise if I did the wrong thing by doing this #4 and exiting.

Please delete the old version of l2mfix, it's been updated, which is why I want you to download it again. :) The new is version is on the link I posted and it has option #4 for "Restore Registry Permission". :tazz:

Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to this item and click FIX CHECKED:

O16 - DPF: Win32 Classes -

Close HiJackthis.

Are you having any other problems?

log from that:

Ran hijack this - checked and fixed 016-dpf: win32 Classes

closed HiJackthis

As far as other problems - I'm not sure - I'll ask Laura if she knows of anything. Laura mentioned that measures would be taken to keep this from happening again - has that occured yet or do we have some more to do?

Wow, Norton actually uninstalled cleanly! Amazing :tazz:

We can get rid of the Symantec activeX controls:

Run HiJacKThis. Place a check next to these items and click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

To help prevent this from happening again you'll need to follow my recommendations (I strongly recommend all of them!):

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Other necessary Programs: *NOTE* If you choose to use one of these firewalls, you will need to disable the Windows firewall that comes in SP2 as only one firewall should be running.

ran hijack and did the 6 items. sorry for the long pause in replies. (life's been fun the last day or two)
We had ad-aware and spy-bot, apparently earlier versions - Laura had downloaded the newer versions here at the start of the problem to see if they could delete whatever was being a pain - I think that is how she found out about the winfix. I ran the old versions of Ad-aware and spybot at least everyother week, and ran them especially after hitting a site that did redirects etc....

We have a linksys router that i thought the installer friend said had a firewall - how do I check this?

I have not looked at the last 3 links yet - the blaster, guard and Hosts files.

Let me ask one of the Tech guys about that :tazz:

I strongly recommend all 3 of them. You only had spybot and adaware before and it wasn't enough, so you need these! MVP HOSTS prevents redirects to known bad sites, btw. Also, you will never know that Spyware Blaster is there. You just install it, update it, then click "enable all protection" and don't have to run it (just update on occassion) it does it's thing just from being installed.

g'morning Michelle;
I sat down this morning to read your reply and everything was shut down - no screensaver running - just the windows logo on a black screen, moved the mouse - it showed the 3 log in choices - laura's account was left open last night with several programs open - this geeks page for example, and two others. ALL 3 were not on. no evidence of a powersurge..... any thoughts or concerns?

Also - I opened expolorer and had typed "geek" for it to do the autofind/ last url thing and it wouldn't. hit the down arrow key aftertyping "geek" in the addy line and it wouldnt pop up the choice menu.

Not sure is everything ok now?

That's most likely from running Cleanup since it deletes all temporary internet files.

Since it's been a couple of days since I've seen one, will you post a new HiJackThis log?

Also, in order to check your firewall, I need to know the router model please.

Do you have any other questions of me?

Here you go.

linksys model WRT54G
wireless-G 4 port

laura is due back tomorrow - I will be able to ask her then if there was anything else other than the final protection stuff.

I looked at the 3 downloads - blaster, guard and HOST - the last seems that you have to constantly update it manually and since we are on XP that it will do a popup window asking us each time if we want to connect to "X"site? I am understanding this correctly? Guard says it has no guarantees that it won't conflict with other security software - you've reccommended them all together so I presume everything you've mentioned to us should be compatatible with it.

Sincere thanks for all your help

linksys model WRT54G
wireless-G 4 port

There is no firewall on this Router. I highly recommend downloading one of the 3 I listed previously (preferably Kerio or Sygate)

I looked at the 3 downloads - blaster, guard and HOST - the last seems that you have to constantly update it manually and since we are on XP that it will do a popup window asking us each time if we want to connect to "X"site? I am understanding this correctly?

It will not pop-up anything. I've got the HOSTS file myself (on XP) and when you are directed to a known spyware site, the HOSTS will redirect to your own computer (127.0.0.1) and you will never get to the bad site. No pop-up. There is no need to constantly update it (just every once in a while when you check for updates on other protection programs will be plenty). I strongly recommend it. You won't even know it's there.

Guard says it has no guarantees that it won't conflict with other security software - you've reccommended them all together so I presume everything you've mentioned to us should be compatatible with it.

Yes, everything I've mentioned is compatible. :tazz:

You can uninstall Trojan Hunter and SpySweeper (since there are just trials) unless you would like to keep them for the duration of the trials. Feel free to delete any other programs I've had you download as well. :)

Michelle; sorry for the Delay - it took a while for Mike to respond to me - he is the guy who said I did have a firewall. He was referring to the Windows XP firewall - which was turned off. I have turned it back on for the time being.

Loaded spyblaster and spyguard no problems - I will do the HOSTS next. I have tried to do the ZoneAlarm - I had to do a scan from its site - which it claims to have found more spyware that the other programs didnt (i saved a copy of the list if you want to read it) When i try to run the .exe file it errors saying "validation failed for C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsdata.dll"

Mike reccommend zonealarm too - my question is - do I just forget it and do another or will they have an issue with the validation too? ie how important is this validation?
