Try file, save as, name the document and choose a save to location

It's there as a safeguard, so best left alone in general, you should be able to change documents individually with save as.

If the document is on a CD then you can copy the file to the hard drive

You can just right click on the file and shoose Properties and disable read-only. I don't know of a global option, and it would be dangerous to change any system files.
