Read many other posts trying to solve this with other answers to no avail. Ewido, and Spybot are now taking over 2 hours to scan. CWShredder is not able to reboot the computer and now shuts it down before it starts. My router has to be unplugged for me to get back online after being on for an hour or so.

Had the nail problem which seems to be gone, but I do not think I ever had a file that ended in r. I just had a nail.exe line.

Long story short this computer needs help.

Hello Cappy,

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Thank you,

Snickets

Hello Cappy,

Please follow the instructions below.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Thank you,

Snickets

Hey Snickets,

Thanks for all of this, things seem to go smoothly while following the directions. Here is the new log. No popups as of yet, no ad shortcuts have shown on desktop, and in general as far as I can see things look back to normal.

If the log looks good then a sincere thank you for your help and if not I will talk to you soon.

Cappy

Hello Cappy,

Are you aware that all of your surfing is routed through KIEV and is being checked?

Please let me know if this is the case and we will have to do some more work to get rid of this situation.

Thank you,

Snickets

Hello Cappy,

Yep looks like we have done the trick this time, please keep an eye out for any odd behavior in the future in Internet Explorer.

Good Job your log looks clean!!!

There are just a couple steps to take in fixing your computer.

1.After something like this it is a good idea to purge the Restore Points and start fresh.

To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

2.Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Check the following:
Do not Show hidden files and folders
Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
Close out the search window.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Thank you for using GeekstoGo to clean your computer!!!
