Got that blasted rdriv.sys worm on my system and have spent hours trawling the internet for a solution, including the many posted here.

The only traces I can find of the worm are:

Registry Values Changed:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\OLE "EnableDCOM" = "N" (Should be "Y")

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa "restrictanonymous" = "1" (Should be "0")

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc (Shouldn't be there!)

I hope someone can help me find the rogue service that it is running under.

This is my HJT logfile:

Please download CleanUp! - Download - HomePage

Don't run it yet.

1. Click Start > Run.
2. Type services.msc
3. Click OK.
4. Locate the service "Mouse Button Monitor", right click it, choose Properties.
5. Change "Startup type" to "Disabled", then click OK
6. Exit services management console.

Repeat the same instructions for Microsoft New Game 2

4. Terminate the worm process or reboot the machine.

Scan with panda (Use IE to download):

http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm

Important: If you are unable to start or Panda reports that it cannot delete a detected file, you may need to stop the risk from running in order to remove it. To do this, run the scan in Safe mode. For instructions, read the document, How to start the computer in Safe Mode. Once you have restarted in Safe mode, run the scan again.

After the files are deleted, restart the computer in Normal mode and proceed with the next section.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

O23 - Service: Microsoft New Game 2 (svehost32) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\svehost32.exe

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

C:\WINNT\system32\winpnp.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\mousebm.exe
C:\WINNT\svehost32.exe
botzor.exe
csm.exe

Click on the button labeled CleanUp!.

When it finishes it will prompt you to restart Windows - there will be one or two files it cannot delete when Windows is running - however, they will be deleted next time Windows starts up.

Reboot and post a new hijack this log and the log panda produces.

OK, I have followed the instructions, however.....

Because the services for "Mouse Button Monitor" and "Microsoft New Game 2 " were disabled in step one, they were not shown on the HJT scan in step two. They are still there but disbaled.

I cannot connect to the pandasoftware scanner, I suspect I have some other malware blocking this site. FWIW, I cannot connect to Amazon either. :tazz:

I removed infected files by doing an AVG scan, instead of panda, because of the connection issue.

This is the current HJT log:

A little more information: I think there may be still something somewhere which is doing something naughty.

As I connected to the internet, my AVG email scanner became active and scanned dozens of outgoing messages (that I hadn't sent) to AOL accounts. I'm not sure if this was activity which happened before the removal of the rogue files (AVG will queue outgoing email messages and sends them whenever online) or something which was happening afterwards.

I reset the registry values I mentioned in my first post, and a safemode scan with AVG, Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D was clean. At that point it was well after midnight, so I didn't get chance to reboot and see how things were. I will try again tonight.

Thankyou so much for your help thus far coachwife, you have got me much further than I could have ever hoped to get.

right-click on this entry and tell me it's properties:

C:\WINNT\system32\5.tmp

Is internet explorer working?

Try scans from one of these locations and provide me with what it finds:

Oh it just gets worse! :tazz:

I think my machine may have been hacked and is being used as a spam server. I had over 50 returned mails in my inbox yesterday, all of which were the same message about discount medications.

As soon as I connected to the internet, my AVG email scanner was trying to attempt to connect to 205.188.156.185

I installed Kerio Personal Firewall to try and block the outgoing connections. When I rebooted the machine, it picked up a couple of things:

"Application is Launching another Application - MOffice MFC Application"

and

"Outgoing Connection Attempt on Port 1059/1063 - CLI.exe"

I disallowed those from happening, and connected to the internet to run a Housecall Scan. I left the scan running, but when I returned, the machine had rebooted itself. The next time I connected to the internet I got this:

Posted Image

which is a symptom of a worm infection. So I'm not sure if someone or something had planted the worm on my system while I was connected or I was just unlucky enough to get infected during that short time online.

Please note that I cannot connect to the internet in safe mode as I use a USB modem and the drivers are not loaded during a safemode reboot.

I will run full safemode system scans tonight, and then attempt to connect to Housecall and post the results. If there's anything else you can think of in the meantime, it would be most welcome.

Please follow all instructions as specified. Print these instructions to ensure all are followed.

Please download this patch from Microsoft.

http://www.microsoft...n/MS05-039.mspx

Please download the following programs, but do not run them yet:

* rdrivRem.zip
  • Unzip it to your desktop.
* Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed
  • After the updates are installed exit Ewido.
* CleanUp!
  • Install it.
* Killbox by Option^Explicit
  • Save it to your desktop.
Open notepad and save these file paths in notepad.

C:\WINNT\system32\5.tmp
C:\WINNT\system32\wpa.exe

You will need this notepad entry for step no. 5.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight "Safe Mode" then hit enter.

1.) Please double-click rdrivRem.bat to run the program - follow the instructions on the screen. After it's complete, rdriv.txt will be created in the rdrivRem folder.

2.) Double-click the Ewido Security Suite icon to run the program.
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "remove", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Exit Ewido
3.) Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

4.) After Cleanup! is finished, run HijackThis. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Connection Manager Monitor] cmmon.pif
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Connection Manager Monitor] cmmon.pif
O23 - Service: Windows Product Activation (wpa) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\wpa.exe

Close HiJackThis.

5.) Run Killbox.exe.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the notepad you saved earlier. Press CTRL + A to select all file paths in the notepad, then press CTRL + C which will copy all of them to the clipboard.

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "OK" at any "PendingRenameOperation" prompt. If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

After computer has restarted continue with the rest of the instructions:

6.) Make sure your firewall is on. Make sure you can turn it off then turn it back on and that nothing is greyed out.
Also, Make sure your Anti-Virus program is working properly - you can turn on and off auto-protect, etc.

7.) Run BOTH of these online virus scans (NOT at the same time!):
ActiveScan
TrendMicro's HouseCall - check "Auto Clean"

Save the results from ActiveScan.

I need you to post the contents of rdriv.txt, the log from Ewido, the log from ActiveScan, and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

Thanks coachwife, I'll try this when I get home.

Should I uninstall AVG before installing Ewido or is it OK to run the two apps side by side?

Keep them both going at the same time.

Your infection is pretty nasty, which you have probably already figured out.

We will get it worked out. I will need you to stay with me, as I will be consulting the experts on the board as we get this worked out. Hang in there and don't get too frustrated. :tazz:

I'd be more frustrated if you weren't helping me. :)

It may seem like I'm not following your instructions to the letter, but that's not the case. I do follow the instructions perfectly but then I'll get to a point where something else drops into the mix and prevents me from finishing and posting the answers to the questions you ask.
