Everytime I start Internet Explorer I am redirected to About:Blank. Following directions from Geeks to Go I have downloaded and run: CleanUp!, Ad-Aware SE, CWShredder, Spybot S&D, Ewido, and TrojanHunter. I've also tried SpySweeper and Microsoft Antispyware and am running Freedom Security Suite (downloaded from Adelphia). All of these claim to have found and deleted various files, but none has fixed the problem. I keep re-setting the home page and it keeps changing back to about:blank.

What can I do next?

Thanks,

Hello RKOOL,

1.Set up a folder by doing the following.
To create a folder:
Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have C:\HJT\ folder.

2. Then go here to download the latest version of hijack this 1.99.1 and save this into the folder you created for hijackthis.

3. Double-click on the hijackthis.exe to scan.
Select "Scan and Save Log".
After the scan save the log somewhere where you will remember.
Then go to the location where you saved the hijack this log and open it up, then hit CTRL A to highlight all the text inside, then right click and hit the copy option then paste the contents back into this thread.

Thank you,

Snickets

Hello RKOOL,

Step 1- Downloading Necessary Programs

1. You have an About:Blank Infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster 5.0 by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Run the CleanUp! installer. You dont need to do anything with it right now.

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Update About:Buster
Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
Now close About:Buster

Step 2- The Fix
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
Reboot your computer into safe mode again

Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O18 - Protocol hijack: about - {53B95211-7D77-11D2-9F82-00104B107C96}
O18 - Protocol: start - {53B95211-7D77-11D2-9F82-00104B107C96} - C:\WINNT\system32\msxslab.dll

After checking these entries CLOSE ALL open windows [browsers and programs] EXCEPT HijackThis and click "Fix Checked."
===================================================

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
C:\WINNT\system32\msxslab.dll

Now run CleanUp!

Please reboot your computer into normal windows.

Once in normal mode please rescan with hijack this and post a fresh log for me to review.

Thank you,

Snickets

Hello RKOOL,

1.Download the Hoster Here
Please do not use program yet

Unzip Hoster to your desktop

Open up the Hoster program.
  • Make sure that the "make hosts writable?" button in the upper right corner is enabled.
  • Click back up Host files
  • then click Restore orginal host files
  • close program
Please reboot your computer now.

Then please rescan with hijack this and post a fresh log for me to review.

Also please let me know how your computer is running.

Thank you,

Snickets

Below is the latest log. I re-set the home page a while ago and so far About:Blank hasn't reappeared, so hopefully the problem is fixed. My computer does seem to be running a bit slow, but that may be because of all the spyware, etc. programs I have been installing to fix this. Once we are sure this is fixed, are there programs I can uninstall that might speed things up?

I appreciate all time and effort you have spent helping with this today. I have wasted countless hours trying to get rid of this thing myself over the past couple of months and am truly grateful for all your assistance.

Hello RKOOL,

Here are some suggestions that I would make for your computer to run more smoothly.

1. Uninstall either trojan hunter or ewido as they both do the same job and if necessary can be redownloaded at any time that you need them.

2. Run hijack this and place a check next to the following items.
Optional Removals -
Fixing them here will not prevent you from opening them manually as needed. Your choice to fix based on your needs:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
(Description: RealPlayer scheduler. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] ctfmon.exe
(Description: CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office XP. CTFMON.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don\'t need these features. CTFMON can be disabled from Control Panel, Text & Speech Services )

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
(Description: Microsoft Office startup assistant. Removing this entry will free up a significant amount of system resources.)

After checking these entries CLOSE ALL open windows [browsers and programs] EXCEPT HijackThis and click "Fix Checked."

3. Please reboot your computer now.

4. Once back in normal mode please run a new hijack this scan and also let me know if your system is running faster. If not please let me know what other programs that you have installed through out this process and we will go from there.

Thank you,

Snickets
