my brother set up my computer when i first got it -he's the comp savvy one. but i would think it was downloaded if you said i couldn't connect to the internet without it -and i had been able to access the internet for over 3 years

it was probably set up before...but...somewhere during your "long story" the driver probably either got gone on corrupted.

since they don't have the driver i need listed...what can i do? anything?

well...hp doesn't make ethernet cards...so....what brand and model is your ethernet card?

um...i don't think i have an ethernet card. i just have the place to plug in the ethernet cord.

hehehehe.....not to sound like im gonna give up but....it would almost be easier if you went and bought a new nic card....they are like 40 bucks or less now adays....but....it's kinda hard without being able to dl software...you should be able to find out what kind of ethernet connection it is...on board or not....when you go to device manager does it give any info on the ethernet device?

i can click on the ethernet controller and it tells me that the driver needs to be reinstalled -which we already know. the only info it really gives is the location, PCI bus 0, device 4, function 0

oooookkk.....it says it's on a pci bus...which suggests it's a pci card... you don't have a digital camera that you could take a picture of the back of the machine with is there?

well...i just need the orientation of the stuff....it seems as though it's a pci card...which would be somewhere lower on the back....like by where you plug your monitor in....but i could be wrong and interpereting something differently
