I am new to the site and have a question. I have a lot of spyware/adware that I'm trying to get rid of. I use a Norton Anti-Virus program and run both Spybot and Ad-Aware frequently. My question regards Ad-Aware. It runs for awhile and then I get message after message saying "Repair Successful - - It is now safe to use your computer. Norton Anti-Virus has removed the problem". I click to continue, as instructed, and it goes through message after message after message and often takes me an hour or more to run an Ad-Aware scan. It looks like most of it regards C:windows.temp files of one name (or number) or another (or C:_RESTORE files). This can't be happening to everybody who runs Ad-Aware because I continue to read how most everybody thinks that Ad-Aware is so easy to run. I have tried, unsuccessfully, to figure out what I'm doing wrong or what setting I can change. Can anybody help?

Hi kamhouse and welcome
First off sorry for the delay in repsonse,

A couple things :

C:_RESTORE files

Is pointing to files located in System Restore, What we need to do is flush your Restore points,

I click to continue, as instructed, and it goes through message after message after message and often takes me an hour or more to run an Ad-Aware scan.

Depending whats on your machine and if the cleaning process is being done properly a second scan with Ad-aware at most should take maybe 15 minutes tops,

It looks like most of it regards C:windows.temp files of one name (or number)

What you want to do is clean out your Temp folders prior to running Ad-aware,

A suggestion here Reboot into SAFE MODE

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Now run a scan with Ad-aware and fix all it finds,

Restart your computer,

Please go Here and unzip the newest version of HJT into a new dedicated folder,
Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it hjt. Unzip HijackThis into this folder. Launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log
This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.
Most things are harmless and needed so don't make any changes.
post a log here please.

Ok Few things we need to do here,

First
Your running HJT from a zip folder
Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it hjt
Move HJT into this new folder please,
This is important so please do this prior to anything else please

Next

Download the DelDomains zip file and unzip it to your desktop.

DelDomains

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

Next
Dowload the following program

CWShredder
It should be the current version, but check for updates

Run Program cwshredder and have it fix anything it finds.

Make sure you click the “Fix” button and let it run and fix all it finds,
Close out the program,

Next

Make sure you can view all Hidden Files/Folders

Please restart HJT put a check next to the following, close all open windows and click “Fix Checked”

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = <http://www.clicktoma...ch.com/sp2.php>
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank

Nice job your log is clean !
How is it running ?
Please use the following suggestion to help prevent reinfection

First Off,
*Be sure and reset your hidden Files and Folders*

Download the following program, For keeping crap off your system to begin with
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests. Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Download Spyware Blaster

Keep AD-Aware. and Spybot 1.3 handy, Check them for updates prior to running and run them weekly
Same with your Anti Virus,

For an added check run an online virus scan, you can use one of the 2 below,
TrendMicro's HouseCall
ActiveScan

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program
Download and install Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

Remeber to Check Windows for updates

Probably a good time to create a new restore point See Here for XP

See Here for ME Name it clean or something like that,

Don77, I noticed immediately after I sent you the log, that I had pop-up after pop-up after pop-up and they were coming so fast and furiously that I couldn't close them all before another one appeared - - but I ran both spybot and ad-aware and they seem to have slowed (for now). It seems as fast as I rid the computer of them, they replicate. Frustrating.

I will take care of your new suggestions tomorrow and let you know if I have future problems (is it okay to contact you directly again?). In the meantime, I want to thank you for your time and effort!

Could you post back a fresh HJT log and also
  • Download FindIt's.zip to your desktop: http://forums.net-in...=post&id=142443
  • Unzip/extract the files inside to a folder on your desktop.
  • Open the folder and run FindIt's.bat and wait for notepad to open a text file. It will take awhile so please be patient ...
  • Then post the results here please, along with the new HijackThis log.

Don77: it's late and I just got your most recent message. So I'll carry out those instructions tomorrow and post another log. In the meantime, can you answer something? I ran both spybot (it found nothing, for the first time!) and ad-aware tonight -- ad-aware found 132 critical items and, as usual, is not able immediately to remove everything. When I restart the computer and run ad-aware again, it again is not able to remove some objects. They are all in the C:\_RESTORE\Temp folder and look like this:

A0352733.CPY (this is the most recent one)

They are all numbered and labeled in this method. There are 9,214 items in this folder, going back to 6/8/99 (which is interesting since I purchased this particular computer in 2001). Can I safely manually delete this folder and all of its contents? I don't know what this stuff is or represents and don't want to delete it without knowing more. Where do these TEMP files come from?

Thanks a lot!

We need to flush your restore points on how to do that see Here

Don77: thanks for answering my last e-mail so promptly. I have a few things to do tonight so probably won't get to the instructions in your last two e-mails until tomorrow evening. But will take care of it and be back in touch.

In the meantime, question: before we started our correspondences, I ordered Gateway's Complete Security Suite package (which has now arrived), comprised of Spy Sweeper, Window Washer, Pre-Empt and GhostSurf. Given that we're in the middle of a "clean", is it best to wait to install all of the Gateway software until we're through?

Don77: With the exception of FindIt (which I still have to do), I've followed the instructions in the two e-mails previous to this one, deleted all my temp files using Cleanup and re-ran Ad-Aware, which found only two critical items (a far better number than 154!). Spybot is still clean. Will install the Gateway security package tonight and get back to you with a new HJT log. Thanks for your continued help.

Actually if you could,
Please download L2m9xfix here:
http://swandog46.gee...om/l2m9xfix.exe

Save it to the desktop and run it. Extract the files, and then open the l2m9xfix folder you just created and run RunThis.bat.

A window will open, and your desktop will disappear, then reappear. Please be patient until the batch says it is completed.

Then please restart your computer, and post a new HijackThis log as well as the entire text of the log.txt file which should be in the same folder as RunThis.bat.

Hi - - just got your message. Yesterday I installed the Gateway security suite (Spysweeper, etc.) and it found 1,007 traces on its initial run. I've quarantined those. [/U]Is there any problem with deleting what's in quarantine after all those spybot/ad-aware/Norton Anti-Virus runs?

I'll proceed with your L2m9xfix tonight and post a new log, as instructed. Thanks for your continued help.
