Hello,
Today I had the thrill of having a computer infected by psguard. I read a bunch of different things on the web and found your group and site to be the most helpful. I registered and followed the instructions posted under the "you must read this before posting a hijackthis log, required steps before posting your log"

The various steps seem to have worked really well except for a few things. I still get a blinking icon in the lower right that tries to get me to go to the psguard web site and my display is still blank (black background). Also, it seems like my MS Outlook will not work correctly.

I think I've pushed through some of the issues but there are still some lingering problems. Something is running late in the start-up that turns my wallpaper black and takes away the option from the display menu. Here is my latest HJT log.

Sam, Thanks for the reply!
I think I've pushed through some of the issues but there are still some lingering problems. Something is running late in the start-up that turns my wallpaper black and takes away the option from the display menu. Web based things seem to be running much more slowly as well.

Let's make sure smitfraud is gone first.

Please download SmitRem.zip

• Save the file to your desktop.
• Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.




Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.

• Follow the prompts on screen.
• Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
• The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Reboot back to normal mode and post a new hijackthis log and the log from smitrem.

Sam,
SmitRem didn't work. I'm not sure why. When running in safe mode, I needed to log into my local machine as the admin unless I chose safe mode with networking.
I tried the networking option and smitrem didn't run.
I tried as the admin and smitrem ran with a whole bunch of "did not find file" while the batch file ran and then it ran the clean disk tool but hung up ( I let it run for an hour and it didn't move the progress bar)

am I doing something silly? Is there another way to clean it?

Download the following reg file to your desktop by right clicking on the link, and selecting save as.

Once it has downloaded, double-click on the smitfraud.reg file on your desktop and when it asks if you would like to merge the data, click on the Yes button.

Reboot your computer and you should now be able to change your desktop settings back to how you would like it. If your desktop still looks strange, go into your display properties and click on the Themes tab. Change the theme to Windows XP and you will now be using the default Windows XP settings. Then change them as you see fit.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log and let me know how things are running.

Your log looks clean to me. How are things on your end? Did you get your desktop back?

Things seem to be running better and quicker.
I didn't get the background on the desktop back though and I seem to be
getting a Regedit error on a cad application. The display still only has the
screen saver and settings tab.
Any suggestions for either problem?

Sam,
I followed the directions but the Smitrem program had an error when I ran it. Now I tried to run it again and it came up with this error:
"Cannot import Smitr~1.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes"
The file then just stops.
I've noticed also that when I use windows explorer to open an associated program by double clicking the file type, I get a bunch of error messages even though the program opens.
Any suggestions?
