Let's find out if something is giving you trouble. Please try it in Safe mode and let me know what happens.

Sam, it ran correctly and didn't give me the error message in safe mode.
However, the really strange thing is that certain programs will give me "file not found" errors and launch the windows installer shield. The strange thing about it is that even though I cancel out of the installer shield, the application opens up after clearing the errors.

make any sense?

Is it certain programs in particular? Which programs have been causing the error and are there programs that don't cause an error?

How is your desktop now?

Sam,
Certain programs are giving me the error. All of the MS based programs work fine. My cad program gives me a "failed to update the registry" error but opens once you clear the error pop-ups. My Dell Image Expert program gives me an error and opens the install shield program. When you close and cancel out of that, the program launches anyway.

I don't have the desktop back.
Other than those problems, the machine seems to be working relatively well.
Any suggestions? Weird issues.
thanks,
BigPoppa

Let's take a closer look using a different type of log.

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE to download Silent Runner's.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Open Notepad, and copy everything in the code box below and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixme.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above "REGEDIT4"!

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\General]
"WallpaperFileTime"=-
"WallpaperLocalFileTime"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"NoDispAppearancePage"=-
"Wallpaper"=-
"WallpaperStyle"=-
"NoDispBackgroundPage"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoActiveDesktopChanges"=-
"ForceActiveDesktopOn"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"Wallpaper"=-
"WallpaperStyle"=-

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

If you get an error, try in Safe mode.

Once it merges successfully, reboot your computer and check your display properties.

Sam,
I tried it and the file ran successfully, however the display properties didn't come back. I can live with the blue background. I just want to be sure that nothing is left from the psguard. I'd like to install SP2 but was waiting for the "all clear".
What do you think?
thanks,
BigPoppa

The active infection seems to be gone, so you're just left with the problems that it caused. You should be ok to install SP2.
