I am experiencing problems with about:blank taking over my browser and have to unckeck 'use a proxy server' everytime i want to connect to the web. I am also having difficulty with the IEXPLORE.EXE process continously starting in Task Manager. I can have as many as 20 identcal IEXPLORE.EXE processes running at the same time, completely slowing my system down. I had difficulty with about:blank 3 months ago and used your guide to remove malware which worked well, but the dredded thing has returned.

Can anyone please help, here is my Hijack this log file; Many thanks in advance.

First we need to download and prepare some tools that we will need to fix your problem.
  • Please download SmitRem.zip
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
  • Please download Ewido Security Suite
    • Install ewido security suite
    • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
      • Install background guard
      • Install scan via context menu
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
      • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
      • Then click on Start Update.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
    • Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
    Ewido Manual Updates

  • Please download Adaware SE 1.06
Install Adaware and check for updates, but don't run it yet.

  • Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

==============

Now that you have the right tools we can start fixing your problem.
Please print out these instructions as the rest of this fix must be done in Safe mode and you won't be able to access the Internet.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

=============

Once in Safe mode, follow these steps:
  • Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

  • Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

  • Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove everything that it finds.

  • Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop.
    • Close Ewido.
  • Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

  • Reboot back into normal mode and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!

  • Save the Panda scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Hallo Sam,

Thanks for your last reply. I carried out all the preparation work you suggested regarding SmitRem, Ewido, Adaware SE and Panda ActiveScan. However, when I booted up the computer in safe mode and ran Hijackthis not all the entries you suggested to check were present in the scan? Here is the logfile that appeared when i ran Hijack this in safemode;

As you can see only the following entries were present that you suggested to checkmark;

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.qfind.net/

I therefore abandoned any attempt to fixcheck anything until recieving further advice. What do you suggest I do now?

I also should tell you that I have had Ewido on my system for about 3 months and the 14 day trial period has lapsed. When I originally installed Ewido I did not uncheck 'Install background guard' or 'Install via context menu' does this matter?
Since my system has been plagued by this malware any time I attempt to run a full system scan using Ewido, the programme automatically closes after about 10-15 seconds, however if I select a folder or drive to scan then Ewido scans without any problems. I do not know what is causing this to happen.

What is the next step i should take, many thanks in advance. :tazz:

If you can still scan individual folders with Ewido scan first the Windows folder and then Program Files. Make sure you save each log file separately and post it here.

Did you run Smitrem. If so, post the log which should be located at C:smitfiles.txt

Don't worry about the hijackthis entries right now and proceed with the rest of the scans as well as you can. Just note any problems that you have and share them with me in your next post.

CLEAN! :)

I then ran Adaware SE and it identified nine minimal risk objects which I cleaned. I then attempted to run Ewido to scan the Programme Files and Windows folders, however ewido now will not open and sometime brings up an error message saying that a component is missing. However here is a log of a scan I ran on C:/ drive on 18/8/05, dont know if this helps.

I know how frustrating it is to do this on a sick computer that's not working well. You are doing fine.

I see you do not have an antivirus program on your computer.
Please download and install AVG antivirus. Follow the prompts to download and install all updates and then run a complete scan.

http://free.grisoft....E/lng/us/tpl/v5

Let me know what AVG finds.

Reboot after the scan and post a new hijackthis log.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your patience with my problems, I feel like i have made good progress since my last reply. I downloaded AVG Anti-virus and installed it onto my system and ran the setup. From the initial scan, 27 infections were found by AVG. Here is the exported log file of all infections found - don't know if this helps you any?

It appears that these infections have now been placed into the 'Virus Vault'. Since these infections have been put into the vault, i no longer have multiple 'IEXPLORE.EXE' processes appearing in task manager and the LAN settings on my internet connection are no longer defaulted to 'use a proxy server'. So it would appear that I have made some progress in solving two of the problems as described in my original post. 'About:blank' is still set as my default homepage though.

Here is my fresh HJT log after the AVG scan;

Let's do a little more cleaning up.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Now that AVG has quarantined those infected files, try to run Panda online virus scan again. Also run a scan with Ewido. Let me know if you still get errors with either of these steps.

Reboot your computer and post a new hijackthis log, log from Ewido, and the log from Panda.

Hi Sam,

Sorry I never posted any progress yesterday. I have now carried out the clean up operation using Hijackthis and Fix Checked the entries you identified. I then ran the Panda Activscan - which now works - and saved a log file. Here are my new HJT and Panda Activescan log files;

I cannot however get Ewido to open. Whenever i attempt to open Ewido, the Task Bar shows ewido, but whenever i attempt to maximise from the task bar nothing happens and when i right click and select 'close' a 'not responding' message appears - don't know what is causing this?

The 'about:blank' problem also seems to be resolved as i changed the homepage to Google and it remains Google after re-start which looks promising.

What do you suggets are my next steps to take? Thanks again. :tazz:

Sorry for the delayed response. The site was down yesterday when I got on.

Go ahead and delete these files that Panda found.

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\TONY FARQUHAR\FAVORITES\Anti Spam.url
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\TONY FARQUHAR\FAVORITES\Online Gambling <-- delete this folder
C:\WINDOWS\applb32.dll

Uninstall Ewido and download the latest version from here.

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Then reinstall it and run a full scan. If you can get Ewido to scan save the log and post it here in your next reply.

Let me know how things are running on your end now. Any problems?

Hi Sam,

I went ahead and deleted the files than Panda found. I have not yet uninstalled Ewido as I am unsure whether it is safe to uninstall this programme as there are quarentined files present from a few months back when Ewido was working on my system. If I uninstall Ewido will these quarentined files hi-jack my system again? That is my main concern regarding Ewido. Also, if I re-install ewido will the 14 day trial be available and will it conflict with the AVG software I now have running??

At present my system is working perfectly, 100% better than before. The IEXPLORE.EXE problem seems resolves as does the about:blank problem. I do have a few additional questions that you may be able to help me with;

1. I am using the windows XP firewall at present, is this a suitable firewall or should I use another?

2. I am currently running Windows XP - Home Edition Service Pack 1. Should I think about uprading to SP2?

3. The files that are in the AVG virus vault - is it safe to delete these or should they be kept?

4. Are there any further steps I can take to ensure that my system does not become infected again?

5. And finally, is there any way to speed-up the start up. It seems that I have alot of programmes running at start-up, are these all necessary?

To answer your question, things are running fina at my end and I am delighted with the support and guidance you have given me - first class. Many thanks for now. :tazz:

I'll answer your questions one at a time. :)

When you uninstall Ewido it will ask you if you wish to remove the quarantined files or leave them alone. Since you are going to reinstall the program just select to leave them there. They will not reinfect your computer as long as they remain quarantined. You probably will not regain full functionality of Ewido, but you should still be able to manually update and scan for malware. Ewido should not conflict with your antivirus program.

I would recommend a stronger firewall than the one that XP provides. Check out the free version of Zone Alarm.

http://www.pcworld.c...fid,7228,00.asp

As long as you are not having any problems you can remove all of AVG's quarantined files.

Here are some optional fixes you can make with Hijackthis. They are not malware. These are programs that run automatically at startup. They are not necessary to be run at every startup and hog your computer's resources. Fixing these will improve boot up time and performance.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

:tazz: :)

After reinstalling Ewido you should be able to run a full scan. It may find a few things, but your log looks clean to me. Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. :)

Hallo Sam,

I have been rather busy the past few days and have not got round to doing all the things you suggested in your last post. I will get round to uninstalling and re-installing Ewido tomorrow hopefully. I have installed the Zone Alarm firewall as sugested and it sems to be running fine - plenty of alerts anyway! - suppose you can never be too safe.

With regard to the start-up speed, you suggested to fix check some entries using HJT. By checking these, are these processes deleted or just disabled at start-up? I am just double checking that it is safe to use HJT to help speed things up.

I also intend to create a system restore point tomorrow and change the IE settings as suggested.

With regard to the other points you suggested I am now running AVG Anti-virus along with the Zone Alarm firewall which are both frequently updated. I take it these programmes are suitable?

I have Spybot Search & Destroy and Adawre SE on my machine already and use these programmes. I assume it is advisable to install SpywareBlaster?

Just a quick update for you, i will inform you of my further progress soon,

Thanks for now :tazz:
