You need to install XP pro on to an empty hard disk (a clean install) to have the best chance of success. If your xp pro is an upgrade version, you need to have an earlier version of Windows on a CD to prove you qulify for the upgrade. Boot from XP CD, when Windows detects a copy of Windows already installed, choose to delete that partition. Now choose to install XP on to the same 'unpartitioned space'. There will be no old files on your hard disk to cause problems. During xp install you will be asked to insert the old version of Windows (XP Home or Windows 98) while setup checks it and then you can take it out and put the xp cd back in.
