Sound trouble

The sound on this computer has started to just stop working all of a sudden. It just stops working on its own. The volume bar will still be up and mute wont be selected and all the volume bars on the volume control menu will be up but no sounds comes out at all. It comes back on eventually on its own.
Is there anything I can do to fix this problem myself? Or is this something that I should have taken to be fixed?

Computer Info-
Compaq Evo N610c Laptop
Intel Pentium 4
Runs on Windows 2000 professional
