problems with cd -rw

My cd rw disk writer is not working. When I put a cd rw (rewriteable) disc in my laptop it starts to spin than stops and says system not responding.
It is a high speed rw. thanks for your help. the dv works, the burner works, amd loading works is just only the RW that is not working

Is it a separate cd/rw? I have an iomega and I attach it to my 98SE and it comes with software. Did you try uninstalling and installing it if that's the case? Also, there were a few times where certain types of cds didn't work with a laptop I was borrowing. Very bizarre, but it happened.
