My laptop is running windows xp home, has a P4 2.4 Ghz processor, 256 megs of memory and has a 20 gig hard drive with only 8 gigs used. I also have an external 120 gig.

Are there any start up programs and/or services that I can stop so that my computer will run faster?

Please go to the malware forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the CLICK HERE .

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.

Well, I used Trend Housecall to scan my computer for virii and it picked up 17 that my new copy of Norton didnt even with auto protect on. I run bi-weekly scans of Ad-Aware SE and Microsoft Anti-spyware and they didnt pick up anything even when I ran them again tonight.

Actually he log is clean just ran through using ewdio and a couple online scans,
A couple optional fixes with HJT but I m thinking it wont make much difference,
What you may want to do is go through your Add/Remove programs and remove any programs you are no longer using,

I would suggets you list your spec's from your machine and let one of the OS folks see if the can find anything
