I was advised by my university to download a patch for windows that protects against a certain worm and I did so, but later found out that I had that patch from an automatic update from August 9. Will this cause any problems that I downloaded a patch manually that already existed on my computer?

It's unlikely

Either it goes through the install and says OK or says you already have this
