I am continually getting a message telling me I have an infection in wininet.dll. My InoculateIT virus program will tell me it's secure but it keeps coming back. I've tried Ad_Aware SE 1.06, Ewido and the panda online scanner, but they aren't doing it...

this is my hjt log

Hi The Ru
Welcome to Geeks to go.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Please ensure Ewido is updated,

Reboot into safe mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Re-open Ewido
  • Click on scanner Do not have any other windows open during the scan.
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.updatesea...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.updatesearches.com/bar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://www.updatesea...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.updatesea...earch.php?qq=%1
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.updatesearches.com/
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSN Messenger] C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
Use windows search facility if you have trouble finding these files.

C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe

After that, Reboot.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log, along with the Ewido log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :)

Andy,

thanks for the help. Here are the new hjt and Ewido logs. I was unable to find msmsgs.exe in the windows directory, but there is a file of the same name in a Program Files/messenger directory. Should I delete this? In the meantime I have also run smitrem.exe on the advice of a colleague. The system now appears to be running o.k. again. You are a champion :tazz:

Hi the ru

Do not delete the msmsgs.exe file located in the Program Files/messenger directory, this is the legitimate version.

Re-scan with HJT and place a check next to the entry below.

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=

Next click fix checked.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :tazz:

Hi the ru

Congratulations! Your log is CLEAN :tazz:

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
