Could someone please review the following HJT log and advise. I've tried all of the favorites to remove in both active and safe mode and this is the one that keeps popping up. It's obviously a hijacker, but I can't find anything unusual. Thanks.

• Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
• Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
• Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.
  
  IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Note; if you recieve any error messages for CMD or Autoexec.bat>> select option 5 from the l2mfix and once at the site, click on the link that apply to your operating system!
Double-click the file it downloads and extract the files to its predetermined System32 folder!

Then post a HijackThis log (not attach) together with the log of the L2Mfix

Thanks, Kat. Per instructions, below is the L2Mfix log followed by the new HJT log. I did get the error for Autoexec.nt file and DL'd and ran the fix for XP Home. What next?

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

• From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter
• Press any key to reboot your computer.
• After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log.
• Copy the contents of log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

I can't thank you enough! I'll make it a point to make a donation to the organization you mentioned in your Bio. The young lady who's laptop we just cleaned works for my wife and is heading back to college Sat. She will be very happy her system is back to normal.

My questions, being a techie myself, is what you found and how you knew what to recommend to clean this problem? The more I work with these types of issues, the dumber I feel. I'm excited about finding GeeksToGo and will use you a lot in the future, but I'd like to keep a little more up on being able to do some of this myself before I have to come to you folks. I'm fairly comfortable perusing HJT logs, but I still find a lot there that I have no idea whether to remove or not.

Here are some items that you will want to add to your to-do list:

These are some tips to reduce the potential for Spyware/Adware/Virus infection in the future:
I would strongly recommend reviewing and installing the following applications if you dont currently have them running on your system:

Use Anti-Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has Anti-Virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Update your AntiVirus Software
It is imperitive that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Spyware/Adware Detection and Removal Programs:
Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and DialersAd-Aware SEIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Ad-Aware SE

[/list]Spybot S&DIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Spybot S&D

[/list]I strongly recommend using both of these programs to catch most spyware/adware

Prevention Programs:

• SpywareBlaster -- SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• SpywareGuard -- SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad -- IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts File -- The MVPS Hosts File replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
• Google Toolbar -- Get the free Google Toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other Necessary Programs:

• A More Secure Browser
  Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser.
  There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend using Firefox

Be sure to also keep up with Windows and IE updates.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Update all these Programs Regularly:Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
