Hi gander23 and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

I noticed that your HiJackthis.exe is located on your desktop, make sure to save HijackThis in its own folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This is very important, so HiJackThis can save backups!

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time. Click here: http://www.microsoft...p1/default.mspx Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.
(DO NOT INSTALL SP2)

thanx for the speedy reply, Excal. i'm not a geek, but i'm not a dumster either, could ya briefly describe how to put HJT in its own folder?

also w/ the service pack, don't they warn not to do it w/o backing up one's data? i don't have any way to do that.

i'll trust your judgement and thanks again for your help.

Sure :)

How to make a permanent folder:

Click "My Computer", then "C:\" and then on "Program Files".
In the menu bar, "File"->"New"->"Folder".
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have "C:\Program Files\HijackThis". Put your HijackThis.exe there.

Hope that helps

OK, got HJT in it's own folder, but the Service Pack takes 3 hrs. on my dial-up. How 'bout if we do the fix and i promise to get SP1 after my DSL works again? (Will take about 5 min's.) That's how i found out i had the thing, when i couldn't connect to my DSL. (Unknown driver error.)

Try this :tazz:

Please go HERE (Microsoft website) using Internet Explorer (not Firefox or any other browser as they won't work)
  • Click on Windows Validation Assistant
  • Click on the Validate Now button.
  • Be patient while the ActiveX loads, do not click on any links.
  • Read the instructions on this page while it's loading. You will be prompted to install - click YES.
  • Enter your product key then click continue
  • When it says "Validation Complete" please click Continue to return to your previous activity
  • Copy what it says and paste it here.
