The past few days I've been 'suffering' under the notorious Aurora/A Better Internet adware programme...

Well, I used a shitload of programmes to delete it, such as Xoftspy 4.15, Norton Antivirus 2005, Ad-Aware SE 1.06, TrendMicro etc.
But these weren't sufficient, it kept coming back.
After I used the HiJackThis, KillBox, Ewido combo, I haven't had any problems with it. I used TrendMicro, Ad-Aware, NAV 2005 and Xoftspy and they couldn't found any file that had anything to do with Aurora.

Anyway, maybe there's something suspicious in my log.
I would appreciate it if someone took a peek at it.

Here's my log:

First, download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Please download Ewido Security Suite (do NOT run it yet!)
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed
  • After the updates are installed, exit Ewido
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Once in Safe Mode:

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

If Cleanup! asks if you want to reboot, click NO

Open Ewido
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "remove", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Exit Ewido
Reboot into normal mode.

Then, please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

*Save the results from ActiveScan!

Copy the results from ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the report from Ewido.

I see the 'qar.exe'-file is still there. It was a file I found suspicious the last time I used HiJackThis.
Is it possible that the 'qar.exe'-file is responsible for 'neededware.com' being added to my Trusted Zone?

Anyway, I hope you can help me. Thnx in advance. :)

Now we'll fix the 'neededware' issue

(Note: It's Dutch rolleyes1.gif. Anyway, there's nothing found happy.gif)

Ja, dat zie ik :tazz: Whaha, ben ook Nederlands ....

-------------------------------------------------------------

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

Copy everything in the quote box below (Starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into notepad. Go up to "File > Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the 'Save As Type' to 'All Files'. Save it as fixme.reg on your desktop. Don't do anything with it yet!

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run]
"qar"=-

Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.
  • Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.

  • Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.

  • Select "Delete on Reboot".

  • Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

    C:\WINDOWS\wigslq.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\qar.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinStat13.dll

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again..

  • Let the system reboot.
After your computer reboots, double-click fixme.reg on your desktop. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES.

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

O2 - BHO: WinStat - {0BAE99AF-A9F7-4f7e-9C72-2C1CC81BE0FF} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinStat13.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qar] C:\WINDOWS\System32\qar.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.neededware.com
O16 - DPF: NDWCab - http://www.neededware.com/ndw4.cab

Close HiJackThis.

Reboot, then rescan with HiJackThis and post the new log.

But, even though I included the file 'wigslq.exe' in the KillBox dropdown menu, the programme only showed that the two other files you mentioned were selected and deleted. Is this a bad thing?

No, probably the file was already gone!

Please run this scan:

Run Panda's online virus scan and perform a full system scan: Panda ActiveScan

Save the scan log and post it in your next reply.

Ok, good to know :tazz:
Anyway, I'm working on the scan now. It may take up till tomorrow to have my next reply.

Just wanted to say that Spyware Doctor still found traces of Neededware.

You will hear from me again soon.

Thnx!

Ok, I'll wait for your scan...

Can you also give me the exact locations from the traces that Spyware Doctor found?

I'm running a new Spyware Doctor scan, to determine where the traces of Neededware are located, and Panda ActiveScan now.
No need to wait for my next post for today, 'cause it will be tomorrow for me to post again.

Thank you very much for so far, I lost already a lot of trash :tazz:
Thnx!

Well, yesterday when I used Spyware Doctor, it detected some traces of Neededware. I ran the program again, and the traces were gone. No more Neededware for me anymore (it seems that way).
Spyware Doctor only found some tracking cookies (also a Geekstogo cookie, which was rated as a 'Medium' threat :tazz:)

When I ran Activescan yesterday, I saw that the 'qar.exe'-file was still there, so I decided to remove it manually.
I did, and today I ran Activescan again, and the 'qar.exe'-file is gone for now.
It only found the following:

Incident Status Location

Spyware:Spyware/ISTBar No disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Oosterbaan\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\javainstaller.jar-3c936701-75b8055c.zip[InstallerApplet.class]

Please go to: Start --> Control Panel --> Java --> General Tab --> Then click Delete Files!

Reboot your computer.

Run Panda's online virus scan and perform a full system scan: Panda ActiveScan

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log in your next reply.

Misschien heel domme vraag, maar mijn Windows is in het Nederlands, en ik weet dus niet wat 'Control Panel' is :tazz:

Btw: The Full System Scan with Panda ActiveScan is Local Drives or This computer?

I removed the Java-files as you instructed, and after that I ran ActiveScan.
ActiveScan didn't find any files in my Java-folder, but Neededware has returned, in my Windows Registry:

Adware:adware/neededware No disinfected Windows Registry

Download and extract: Registry Search
Double-click the icon for RegSearch.exe to launch the program.
Enter neededware to search for and click "OK".
After completion Notepad will be opened with all the found instances of the string.
The resulting file is saved in the same location as RegSearch.exe.
