I have run all suggested programs to no avail. I think this program regenerates itself by means of a running process which prevents deletion of its files. I deleted a similar one, Virtumonde, some time ago with help in this forum by combination of Killbox & Hijackthis. Here, I can't identify the process that's keeping it alive- can you help? There are 3 undeletable files in my temp folder.... I'm pretty sure that's it...Here's my log:

Hello Scott and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download
CWShredder and save the file to your desktop

Download
cwsserviceemove.reg file and save the file to your desktop

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and then OK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://win-eto.com/hp.htm?id=33464
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://win-eto.com/hp.htm?id=33464
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System Redirect] C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysbho.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: sysmain.dll

Click Fix checked

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysbho.exe
sysmain.dll

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Unzip cwsserviceemove.reg file to your desktop. While in safe mode, double click on it and grant it permission to add the registry items

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop and post in to me in your reply.
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let me know if any problems persist.

Phil- thanks for the quick response. I did everything you suggested- and it seems that the suspicious files in my temp folder are deleted- but my computer is now missing a file called wininet.dll-- I cannot operate IE or access the internet or open various other programs because of that-- it seems to have occurred with use of smitrem. It suggests I ask you how to find another copy of that file. I am using another computer now- can you help me get the other running so I can send you my logs and test to see if we were successful?

Hello again

Apparently this is happening due to a change in the way Panda scans and cleans

Click start>run and type command (cmd for NT).

Type:

copy c:\windows\system\wininet.dll c:\windows\desktop

Reboot. Scan the desktop folder with eTrust Web Scanner. When done, make sure the box is check for wininet.dll and click cure.

Reboot to command prompt and delete system\wininet and oleadm (oleext), then copy clean wininet from desktop.

del c:\windows\system\wininet.dll

del c:\windows\system\oleadm.dll (oleext.dll)

copy c:\windows\desktop\wininet.dll c:\windows\system

Thanks again for quick response. The command prompt was unsuccessful- it says "this file cannot be found." Could I possibly copy wininet.dll from this computer (such file exists in System32 folder) to a disc, install it on the one that we're working on? It is a Microsoft file- this computer runs XP, the one we're working on has XP Pro. Also, can you clarify the instructions on deleting the suggested files--just type those lines in the command box and enter? Thanks again for your help.

The answer is yes to question 1 and copy and paste rather than type to question 2.

OK I installed wininet.dll and regained internet access etc. Unable to delete files at command prompt, by default it shows a filepath that cannot be erased and obviously is not path of those files.?...My IE seems to be working Ok and the previous suspicious files are gone. Here are my logs:

Well Scott, the real question is, how is your PC? Any pop-ups or pop-unders, redirects etc?

Phil- it seems OK, no popups or evidence of Psguard. The files you wanted deleted are not present. I got clean scans from Adaware, Spybot and Ewido. Only thing that worries me is a file that keeps appearing in my temp folder that won't be deleted- first it was DF1A4F, then I apparently deleted it- it was invisible in WE, but I could see it through Killbox-- on attempting to delete it on reboot with Killbox, it's gone but replaced by a file called DFB49E-- is this innocuous or?? I had a problem like this with Virtumonde- thought it was dead and 3 days later it was back.....your thoughts?

Hello again Scott

I think anyone who has had a brush with Vundo (esp. Vundo B) is going to be overly concerned. The files you have mentioned are necessary and should not be deleted. They will be replaced on every reboot. As my son says "Chillax"

I think you should have this message:

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)

Happy safe surfing Scott!
