Problems: My Computer, particularly Internet Explorer, is running incredibly slow. Additionally, I am not able to reinstall World of Warcraft, even after getting rid of my world of warcraft folder.

I took all the steps I was told to in the "start here" thread. For some reason my computer got even slower after deleting spyware/worms, and uninstalling my expaired trial Mcaffe Security center.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto

The entry below in GREEN is optional. Viewpoint is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

winupdates
Viewpoint (optional).

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in add/remove in your next response

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\Program Files\winupdates
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint (optional)

After that, Reboot.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :)

Well, I fixed the two entires I was told to.

Several viewpoint programs were avialable in Add/Remove programs, and I uninstalled them. Winupdates was not present.

Niether were present in my Program Files folder.

After rebooting, the internet ran at pretty much normal speed, and it continues to now. :tazz: Thanks alot for all the help your site gave me, and your post in particular, Andy.

The following issue may not be caused by malware, but i feel like I eliminated every other option:

Unfortunatley, World of Warcraft is still unable to reinstall. Thinking that the disks were scratched, I copied the installer and installer tomes into a folder, and tired to install from that folder. (I did this in the exact way the game developer's tech support website told me to)

I have tried defragging, and installing with safe mode and under selective startup mode. Each time I try to install the game, It installs perfectly but then stops at a particular file. (Called terrain.mpq) No warning or error message pops up, the installation simply stops, every time on the same file.

Any Ideas, malware related or not, about how to fix this? do you think re-copying the installer tomes into the folder might help?

If you currently have no antivirus & firewall installed, please make it a priority to get protected.

If the disc is scratched, there are companies that can remove scratches, I had this done on my own windows OS disc very cheaply.

  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
