Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O2 - BHO: CControl Object - {3643ABC2-21BF-46B9-B230-F247DB0C6FD6} - C:\Program Files\E2G\IeBHOs.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: SDWin32 Class - {3BD1943F-771B-489A-9438-7E10F3BDB342} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbpcq.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [btoqnmhnao] C:\WINDOWS\System32\tpjhcc.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Rxagik] C:\WINDOWS\Meruoq.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wbpcqc] C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbpcqc.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Jxhc] C:\WINDOWS\ugqlwz.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rsastk] c:\windows\system32\pmhvrvg.exe r
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gejgdc] C:\WINDOWS\system32\gejgdc.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dpnaddr] C:\WINDOWS\System32\dpnaddr.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msacfi] C:\WINDOWS\system32\msacfi.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
    O16 - DPF: ppctlcab - http://www3.ca.com/s...st/ppctlcab.CAB

    O16 - DPF: {1D0D9077-3798-49BB-9058-393499174D5D} - file://c:\counter.cab

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

    C:\Program Files\E2G<===Folder
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbpcq.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\tpjhcc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\Meruoq.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbpcqc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\ugqlwz.exe
ALCXMNTR.EXE<===You will have to Search for this one
    c:\windows\system32\pmhvrvg.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\gejgdc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\dpnaddr.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\msacfi.exe
    C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903<===Folder
    c:\counter.cab

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures.

I am currently using a trial copy of Trend Micro's Penicillin. It alerted me today that I have the folowing virsus; TROJ VLINCE.A It said that it existed in my System Volume Information\ restore directory.
Will all the cleaning that we did, should I still have this problem? I had previously been using a different virus and anti-spam software, that didn't seem to do the job, thus I am trying the Trend Micro app.
I don't seem to be having an issue with pop-ups though.

This cleans your restore cache and should get rid of that message

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren

I have 3 questions after reviewing the last info you sent. My 15 yr old son likes to watch music videos on-line, which I have been told put all kinds of malware on your computers. I have banned him from the computer until it was cleaned. So do block these sites, or are there specific things you would recommend to protect the system if he goes there?
Secondly, if I downloaded XP SP2 when my system potentially was infected, should I download it again?
Do you have a favorite antivirus software?
Thanks

1) SpyAds and MVP Hosts as described in my last post

2) No, you don't have to re-install Sp2 again.

3) We are not supposed to endorse any software. I can however tell you that I chose Kaspersky Antivirus (Not the suite). I don't believe in Suites because there are always some very weak modules. Kasperkky and NOD32 are very good and have received the Top Awards for excellence in their field over the last couple of years.

I can't begin to thank you enough for working with me for 3 days to clean up my computer mess. I work for a large software company and am totally impressed with your knowledge and the format in which you work. Your detailed step by step process made it almost simple to follow. There were times however, that I was terrified of wiping my hard drive clean or making it 'unbootable'. But it is working great and I am in such a better mood. My husband and son thank you as well.
jfsalmon48. And yes I will contribute, although I don't know if we will ever win the battle against internet abuse.
