Does SATA II require SATA II motherboard to work?

I'm shopping to replace my SATA hard drive (maxtor). I noticed that there were SATA II drive. Does anyone know if this is backward compatible?? Will SATA II hard drive work with existing motherboard? Better stick with SATA I?

ur motherboard have to support sata 2 only u can use sata 2
