Hi,

I located the post by "chrismgan" on 14 Aug 2005, and have encountered similar symptoms to what he has described. ie I am getting a blank blue screen on startup- no desktop icons. Further to this i am also not able to connect to the internet. This has made it considerably harder to follow the instructions on the Malware removal steps page.

I have had to use another computer to connect to the internet.

Can someone help me?

I see signs of three antivirus programs in your log. This can cause system instability and even crash your computer. Please select one that you want to keep and then uninstall the other two.

I'm assuming since you are posting a hijackthis log that you have some capability to run programs even without the access of your desktop. If that assumption is incorrect please let me know.

Follow these steps as well as you can. If you can't perform a certain step, make a note of it, and move on to the next step.



First we need to download and prepare some tools that we will need to fix your problem.

• Please download SmitRem.zip
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
• Please download Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
  If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

• Please download Adaware SE 1.06
  Install Adaware and check for updates, but don't run it yet.
  
  
• Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Now that you have the right tools we can start fixing your problem.
Please print out these instructions as the rest of this fix must be done in Safe mode and you won't be able to access the Internet.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe mode, follow these steps:

• Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
  • Follow the prompts on screen.
  • Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
  • The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
• Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove everything that it finds.
  
  
• Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop.
  • Close Ewido.
• Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.
  
  
• Reboot back into normal mode and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
  
  
• Save the Panda scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Hi Sam,

I've tried to follow your instructions as best i can. I still do not have any icons, or a taskbar.

The major obstacle i am having is that i cannot connect to the internet. I am having to use another computer to download the programs on to a USB drive.

I ran smitrem, however, i was unable to locate a log anywhere.

I ran adware, however the scan pauses on the file or folder: C:windows/system32/dllcache and i have to stop it.

I ran ewido, and it worked! I attach the log below.

I was unable to follow this instruction: "Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present". I couldn't find "website".

I could not do a Panda scan as i can't connect to the internet.

Please download LSPFix.exe
Do not run this program yet, but we may need to use it to restore your connection later.


Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs and uninstall New.net



Next let's see what we can do just with Hijackthis.

Please make sure that you can view hidden files.
Enable show hidden files and folders:

• Click Start.
• Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• Select the View Tab.
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
• Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
• Click Yes to confirm.
• Click OK

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe mode, delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

Hi,

I found the smitrem log per your instructions. It is attached.

I was unable to uninstall new.net as i could not see it in "add/remove programs".

I was unable to open my computer or explorer, and thus was unable to get into tools to enable viewing of hidden files.

I ran hijackthis and fix checked all of what you had suggested.

I was unable to delete any of the files you suggested in safe mode.

Sorry for the delayed response. The site was down yesterday when I tried to respond.

Your log looks clean now, so that would indicate to me that malware is not causing your problem to persist. So all we need to do is make sure those bad files are gone and repair the corruption.

On your keyboard hit the Windows button and E simultaneously to bring up explorer. Then you should be able to set up your system to view hidden files and delete these files.

Hi Sam,

I'm unable to get into explorer as the windows key + e function is not working. Nor is the windows + r function. Nothing happens when i press the keys simultaneously. I tried typing "explorer" in create new task and i get a message saying:

Windows cannot find 'explorer'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

You need to perform a repair installation of Windows XP. You will not lose anything on your hard drive by doing this, and it will restore corrupted and missing system files. Please follow the steps at this link.

My brother had a go at running the repair installation and as it so happens he installed a fresh copy of XP! eh.

Did he format your hard drive first or just reinstall XP? That's important because if he just reinstalled XP you will probably still have malware present.
