Ok the file I 1st sent you, you say it doe's not show up on the 98SE machine
Is this still on the floppy? If yes put the floppy in the a drive of the 98 machine go to my computer and double click> go to A drive double click
go up to view at the top go to> folder options click on> view tab
click on> show all files click ok does the file show up now?
If yes then copy to you windows system folder as I showed previous.
If not then check your email I sent you a zipped version.
from your email save attachment to A: drive when you put the disk in the 98 machine can you see the zipped icon in A:?
highlight the Icon right click does it give the option extract to ?
If yes then choose this. This should start winzip it should say extract to
click on the + sign next to C: then work down to the windows folder then click on the + sign next to windows> go down and click on the system folder(not the +) this should now have at the top extract to c:\windows\system
click on extract.
you should get a green light on the bottom of winzip.
Close winzip and reboot.
Any more errors?

If you do not have the option to extract to when you right click then just double click the zipped icon this should start winzip

I thought I did it, but...
I click on my computer, click on c, click on unzipped, click on Msnp32 and it has Msnp32.dll, Msnp32, and readme. When I click on Msnp32.dll it brings up a window Open with. Then I don't know what to do. I restarted the computer and it brings up this:

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.

The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI fiel refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or set up program.

If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

vnetsup.vxd
Press a key to continue

then this al shows up again, but with this

vredir.vxd then again with
dfs.vsd then again with
nwlink.vxd then again with
vserver.vxd then a window pops up like before

Windows Networking
showing that msnp32.dll file missing, I click on and the desktop comes up.

Basic files to setup the network on the computer, that is what the system.ini is refering to. Have you any friends with a 98SE disk.

I've been looking! I guess that's what I'll need. When I get one, how do I go about redoing everything?

when you get one that will be the easy part.
You put the cd in then go to click start, all programmes, accessories, system tools, system information, tools then run system file checker and replace any files it asks for from the 98SE CD then reboot.

I was reading through this again and noticed

I click on my computer, click on c, click on unzipped, click on Msnp32 and it has Msnp32.dll, Msnp32, and readme. When I click on Msnp32.dll it brings up a window Open with. Then I don't know what to do

You do not click on this file to open it it lives in the windows system folder. You copy it to there and reboot.
Cheers
