Windows 98 stuck in MS-DOS mode

i restarted to get the c:\WINDOWS prompt, i typed in type config.sys and it comes up with file not found.

lets try a quick one
at the dos prompt type in scanreg /restore (space between scanreg and /)
does this give you a list of 5 files to choose from? pick an old one
yes it could be the disc was loading a dos program and that is the line in the autoexec. file

This has worked for me, except after selecting a date prior to the safe-mode problems, we restarted the machine and it loaded with a normal display.

it has to be at the C: prompt then change back to c:> then type in
dir|sort|more the | is on the back slash key
we are looking for config.sys and for msdos.sys
we may have to replaace your msdos.sys file

I did what you said, after I selected an old file it said to click restore and it restarted and went back to dos mode

their is one called config.sys, but nothing with msdos.sys

At the prompt put in 'type config.sys' press enter leave out the '
what is the 1st line

ok there has to be a file called msdos.sys
boot in to safe mode go to start> find>files and folders
in the top box type in msdos.sys
does this show the file?

ok go back to the c:>
type in
attrib -s -h -r c:\msdos.sys
then go
dir *.sys
can you see the file now?
