Sorry this is a duplicate of an earlier post (7:42AM) where I made a mistake and added my HJT log as a reply. I later found out that this delays a response so I will include the log in this post.

I have not been able to get rid of the W32.desktophijack virus from my computer. I have bought Norton antivirus, spysweeper, and have also downloaded the free programs suggested on this site without any success.

Here is my HJT log. I hope someone can help me. Thanks.

We can help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to reinfection and we're both just wasting our time.

Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Okay I finally (2hr download time) downloaded the service pack and installed it on my laptop. During reboot I noticed that Norton did not warn me of the desktophijack virus.? So I did a full Norton scan and it did not find this virus. Did this service pack solve my problem?

Here is the latest HJT log

I guess I should have known it wouldn't be that easy! Just to check Norton I ran Ewido scan and it found 8 infected objects. Spyware.look2me and Spyware.coolwebsearch but so far no hint of desktophijack.? Don't know if I jumped the gun by running these scans, hopefully not.

Let's see what this clears up. Click here to download dsrfix. Extract it from the zip file to your desktop - the program creates and names the new folder to house the files. Next, close Internet Explorer and open the new dsrfix folder. Double click on the dsrfix.bat file. Once dsrfix has completed, it will close on its own.

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [apisvc.exe] C:\Windows\System32\apisvc.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sdkiz32.exe] C:\Windows\sdkiz32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dinst] C:\Windows\dinst.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System service62] C:\Windows\etb\pokapoka62.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CAS Client] "C:\Program Files\Cas\Client\casclient.exe"

Exit HijackThis when done. Reboot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded. Using Windows Explorer, find and delete the following:

C:\Windows\System32\apisvc.exe
C:\Windows\sdkiz32.exe
C:\Windows\dinst.exe
C:\Windows\etb <-- folder
C:\Program Files\Cas <-- folder

Exit Explorer and reboot into Normal Mode. Rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here.

A few new pests have appeared. First, unload ewido guard to stop it interfering.

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5483427F-93B8-1470-5A89-E6B56484CDB2} - C:\DOCUME~1\Rusty\LOCALS~1\Temp\gvyzytozmdc.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [secserv.exe] C:\Windows\System32\secserv.exe

Exit HijackThis when done. Click here to download the Hoster. Extract it from the zip file into a folder and doubleclick on hoster.exe. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit the program.

Reboot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded. Using Windows Explorer, find and delete the following:

C:\Windows\System32\secserv.exe

Exit Explorer and reboot into Normal Mode. Rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here.

I guess I did not quite understand about ewido. The last time I just disabled the auto feature. This time I uninstalled the entire program. Looking better I think.

Seems to be running a lot better than when we started. Thanks a lot!

I ran a spysweeper scan and Norton scan The spysweeper found 17 items including apropos, cas, and 4 or 5 Trojans. Not sure what is going on there. Are these items that have infected my computer or are these items that spysweeper has prevented from attacking??

Norton did not find anything!

May just be remnants. Run these applications:

Click here to download Spybot Search & Destroy v1.4 - install, update, scan and fix all RED items it finds. Reboot when done.

Click here to download Ad-Aware SE and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file.
  • Click "Start"
  • Select "Perform Full System scan"
  • Click "Next" to start the scan.
When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found.
  • Click "Next". The bad files will be listed.
  • Right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side.
  • Click "Next" again
  • Click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".
Reboot when done.

Click here to download Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta, check for updates and run it. Reboot when done.

Rescan with HJT and post a finallog here.
