Trying to remove Bridge.inf...now lost IE [RESOLVED]

I'm new at this and hoping I'm posting this in the correct spot.
Norton Internet Security scans I have Bridge.inf (WinFav) in Winnt/internet explorer downloaded program files BUT they cannot remove it. I have tried their hand method but it's still there. I then added AVG Anti-virus, Noadware, Xoftspy to computer to try and get rid of this pesky thing. They found other things (but did not detect the bridge.inf) I had and deleted them but not the Bridge.inf.
I have tried clearing cookies, temp.internet files, disc cleanup, files/folders from %temp%, making sure somewhere that the files are not hidden, turning off system restore....
One of the suggestions was to delete files/folders from %temp%. Now that I have done that I cannot open up Internet Explorer. I can log in under my sons name and open internet explorer but not mine. So I've done something to make it disappear. I only get an error messg. to send report AND I still have pesky
Bridge.inf.
Any other suggestions for removing Bridge.inf and restoring Internet Explorer?

Hope I'm posting update correctly....I have followed your info for suspected malware...Used Clean Software, House Call, Ewido, Trojan Hunter & updated Windows...reran all the other stuff I have, deleted %temp% files/folders, etc. etc.
IE has now decided to work again...I normally don't use it; I use AOL but just wanted to make sure it was working. I also rebooted and ran a Hijackthis log. Hopefully I'm going to cut/past it correctly.....Bridge.inf. is still showing up on my Norton scan.

I have read everything possible on your web site of different things to try.
I ran Norton Security 2005, NoAdware, Xoftspy, Ewido, Spywareblaster, Trojan, and Panda. Norton was the first program to pick up the Bridge.inf but I just can't delete it even using their manual instructions. I ran all the other stuff and no one else picked up anything else but Panda. It also picked up Keen, and a few other things but it doesn't delete it for you or at least I can't figure that part out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The Internet Explorer comes and goes. I only use it occassionally usually AOL. Thanks....

With regard to Xoftspy and noadware, they are programmes with a less than glowing reputation, and i would strongly suggest that you uninstall them. This link will show you what i mean

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.

Ok...I've tried this again..hopefully got it right this time. Computer is now running very very SLOW since downloading this? I hope that's not typica. Here is new HJT log. Scottiemom has to turn in now as it's getting close to midnight in ole PA and my scottie pups will be up in about 6 hrs....talk to you tomorrow....thanks again.

Hi Scottiemom

Firstly, thanks for getting the upgrade done. :tazz:

As Norton is still picking up the bridge.inf file in its scans, can you please tell me exactly what Norton says about it, ie where on your system it is finding it?

Also, can you tell me if your PC is part of a network please?

Norton says its
C:\Winnt\Internet Explorer Downloaded Program Files\bridge.inf
File name: Bridge.inf
Threat name: WinFavorites

I have tried their manual delete but it hasn't worked. I never see WinFav or bridge.inf. listed anywhere to even try to delete it. So I don't know if it has some hidden name or not. I made sure "all files" were not hidden but doesn't seem to matter. When I ran the Panda it picked up some other stuff Keen, the bridge.inf, a separate WinFavorites...but it didn't have any delete method.
Your question about PC...It is a home PC that only I and my son use and it's not connected to anything else. Once in a blue moon my hubby will print a boarding pass but that's about it. I can get onto my sons account and he doesn't use that often. Mostly song stuff. That's about it. Thanks

Hi there Scottiemom :)

There are a few obvious things to fix first, then we need to dig a bit further into this.You should print these instructions out for reference, as some of this fix is in safe mode where you will have no net access.

Step #1

Please disable any real time protection you are running in your security programmes as these can interfere with HJT when it fixes items. You can re-enable them later.

Step #2

Rescan with HJT, then Place a checkmark against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running, then Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Step #3

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if the main link does not work) and install it. Please Do not run yet.

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.If you already have Ewido, Do not download a new copy, just ensure that you have the latest updates installed.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.<<<<Scottiemom, How to update Ewido
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Step #4

Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Step #5

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Step #6

Open up and run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Step #7

Reboot into normal mode and ensure that your realtime protection is re-enabled.Then please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Step #8

Please post the Active scan log, Ewido Log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running
