A buddy of mine had me take a look at his machine last night because it was running slow. Having benefited from this forum before, I Dl'd Adaware, spybot and HJT.
Adaware found and removed several, Spybot found and removed several but also gave and error (I did not write it down). Everything seemed to be OK.
Today he calls back and he cannot get explorer to display any files. He can log on (dialup) but the "sent packets" remains at 399 regardless of how many pages he tries to access. It appears he is not requesting anything. The browser just continues to give "page not found" errors.
Also every time he boots, he gets a window saying "Casino is not installed and will remain silent for 12 hours" ???????

I ran a HJT log and thought you guys could have a look at it. Thanks in advance

You have a number of randomonly named files on your system. We like to start with an online virus and trojan scan. Even though you have antivirus software on your system, it can become corrupted by malware.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Reboot your PC.

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {3EC8E271-FAB9-418a-8A8E-65AEB4029E64} - C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\vrd.dat (file missing)

C:\WINDOWS\Help\SBSI
C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\syskb.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\binodbc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Web\net.exe

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. <_<

Coachwife6, Thank you soooo much.
I did get a chance to visit my buddy and take a first pass on the cure you proposed.
I ran lspfix and that fixed internet problem.
Ran the online scans (found 1 trojan)
Went through the HJT as you suggested.
Tried to delete the files/folders (in safe mode) some were absent, one gave me an access violation and would not delete.

The machine rebooted clean (no casino, no connection attempt)

I ran HJT and noticed that there are still several "O10 - Hijacked Internet access by New.Net" present.
I did not get a chance to save the log and thought I would go back tomorrow after church and repeat you suggestions.
I will then post a new log.

Again thanks, we are on the right track.

There's a new.net removal tool, but sometimes it causes you to lose the internet connection. Try the rest of the items suggested. And if you don't get it worked out, we'll work from there.

Make sure all files are showing. Start--My computer--tools--folder options---view---make sure recommended is unchecked.

This is getting worse.
I went back through the steps you outlined and I could not delete the newdotnet directory because newdotnet6_38.dll would not delete (in use or dik full message) So I renamed it hoping I could tell when it was accessed.
Question: when you wrote C:Windows\inf you mean the directory "inf" right?

Ok, so I reboot and sure enough I get warning that it could not find newdotnet6_38.dll. but also the boot freezes. The screen is mostly complete but does not have the bottom tool bar.
I reboot and this time I get a warning about system32\lsass.exe and that windows is shutting down.
Tried again in safe mode and and got "RPC terminated unexpectantly" and machine is shutting down.
I brought the machine home and now when I boot it goes to the background picture and stays (30 minutes so far)

HELP.

Got the machine running again.
Here is the latest Hjt log.

I still see the Newdot and will deal with it this evening. Anything else that looks odd?

New.Net is the only problem, but there's a chance something else coud show up when it's removed.

Okay, I think we (mostly you guys) got this one fixed. Seems to be running, stable and no problems on boot.

Here is that latest HJT log. Let me know if you see anything and if not put this one in the win column and thanks a million to Coachwife6 (again) and admin.

Good job JM.

The following are unnecessary and will free up some resources.

O4 - Global Startup: hp center UI.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Shadow\ShadowBar.exe

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN <_<

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. :D
