Hey,

I hav'been hanging round in the HijackThis section for the past week and you guys fixed my spyware problem. thank for that.

But the battle with my PC continuous.

now that my PC is clean. I realy want to reinstall ME. Becaus I have been messing around with registry and aparently I erased to much.
Example: Office is installed on my system but is not working anymore, and I can not uninstall them; My CDR does not work any more (I alredy trayed several programs); ...
I realy want to start with a clean windows again. But I have the problem that I can not backup my data on cd's.
Is it possible to delete just windows Me and keep other files intact? as discribed in the pinned topic of this forum?

That would all depend on the files that you want to keep. Generally, you can re-install an operating system and keep all files located in a specific directory ( of your own choice ). However you will have to me more specific as to which programs and which kinds of files you wish to keep. The programs you have installed that still work will all be lost if you decide to do a clean install. Then again...you may wish to make of simple copy of your settings ( these being your registry settings and file locations and associations ). This however can be quite tedious. If, as I have understood, you wish to keep some of your programs and files, then the best thing would be to locate and backup the files you wish to keep, being doc's, txt's, pdf's, pictures , movies and music so t hat you still have them accesible, and then re-install the entire OS.

Ofcourse there will be those who will disagree with me, however, if you indeed backup your data, the data that you wish to keep, then the installation of the software is not a problem.

Before you resort to any solution however, please make sure what you have, what you wish to keep and program,s that you have available to re-install.

Hey Twism,

The data I want to keep are mainly MP3, avi, doc, dwg, ... and also I have made 1 directory with all the install files of the programs (found on the internet) running on my system.
I dont mind installing all programs again.
So could I put all MP3, avi, doc, dwg,... and the directory with install-files in 1 directory. delete every other file and directory. And install ME again?
(Or is there an basic program to write CD's, that normaly always work. So I can format my harddrive )

You can backup to cd ofcourse. There are various sites that have freeware burning programs so that you may easily backup your data on cd. If a clean install is preferred yes a backup to cd is usually best. Here is a site with a selection of cd-burning applications you culd use. http://www.snapfiles...m/fwcdburn.html

As I understand it, the files you wish to backup are not difficult to find or move to another folder as you have most likely already done. So here are your basic options :

1.) You can move or copy all the files you wish to keep to another data folder ( provided this folder is not in the standard windows folder like Program Files, Documents and Settings, Windows or Winnt folders. ) In other words, make sure the folder you create for backup data is directly from your root C:\ drive...eg C:\Backup\

2.) You can dowenload a freeware burning application from the link above and burn all the disered files to cd, thus enabling you to safely format your hdd and perform a clean install.

Of the burning apps from that link deepburner is probably best for your purposes.

Deepburner is not working on my system. I think my ME platform is compleetly messed up.
normaly I use easycdcraetor but that started giving an error in creator.dll and that continued even after reinstall. I have tried deepburner and 2 others but they freezeup when the actual burn shout start. Or could the problem not be the software but the CDRW it self? (I can read CD's with the CDRW)
So I can not make backups on cd.
Now I'm using partitionmagic to make a separate partition for the data I want to save. Because I heard it is possible to format only one partition on a HD with more then one partiton. ( is that correct? can you confurm that?)

Hey,

I have a free weekend. So I just formated my C drive and I'm installing my programs again. All is going very well excipt my monitor isn't working properly. It is installed as a standard monitor with 16 color and 640 by 480 pixels. In the mannual of the monitor it says it is a plug and play. Windows should find the right driver. And something else. I have a Hercules 3D-cart of 32Mb but that seems not to be installed at all. and I have already done several checs for new hardware.
any sugestions?

YES!

I just found the problem. I found a driver for my 3D-card and now everything is running great.

And guys, I really want thank you for the good advice and the time you invested in me, a guy who asks propably stupid questions and can't even write english very wel.
