Do you have a startup disk in the floppy drive? If so...remove it and reboot.

Ok...one more trick....

Start up disk back in and reboot...when you get the options, press F5 for prompt. At the A prompt type c:...at the C prompt type windows\command\scanreg /restore and press Enter...using the arrow keys, choose a restore point before all this started to happen (go back 2 or 3) and press Enter. Let me know how it goes.....

Hey wannabe1

have you used scanreg /restore alot?

just wondering if you have anymore wisdom to share on the subject?

I have used it probably less than 6 times, but have had alot of success, would you do me a favour and try it without the space?

thanks, dont bother if you are busy

WhatThe...

Used to use those cammands quite a bit with pretty fair success when ME was more prevalent. I had to dust off an old machine and my brain for this one... :tazz:

I'll PM you with the little bit more I remember...it won't take long to read...

Hi there,

Nice thread.

I do have also a problem of boot.

When I tried to restart my computer, i had this message :
"Registry File was not found. Registry services may be inoperative for this session"

I heard that I had to use SCANREG, that's how I found this thread.
Even though your explanations are pretty clear and accurate, it unfortunately doesn't work for me.

When i launch scanreg /restore
I have a blue screen with "Microsoft Registry Checker" on top, and "Checking system files..." on bottom. So far, it seems normal.

But the screen with all the previous backup doesn't appear.

Instead I do have a new line on top : "C:\>" that is "superposed" to the previous screen.
In other terms, when I write, it gradually erases what is behind, and the letter are in clear blue and the back is in a darker blue (i.e. the same has in the previous screen, not the classic white on black).

It seems that the "checking" is bugging.

What should I do ?
Is "scanreg /fix" useful ?

Hoping that you could save me, thank you.

PS : I hope I made myself clear as English is not my first language.

It finally works.

I don't know really why.
When I restarted the computer, it was very, very, very slow. So I let him loading Me in safe mode. It took 5 hours !
When I restarted in normal mode, i had a blue screen error.
So i rebooted with a floppy disk, i finally managed to make "scanreg /restore" work to choose a previous back up.

That's it.

Anyway thx for the previous advices that are really helpful.

you think you could help with a sound card problem ?
im using windows 98 se. i dont have a disk( installation) for the card though.

In the boot up dos screen it says something like this:
Crystal ware Sound fusion Initialization Utility version 2.80.....
*Error loading Dos Configuration file
And also:
Crystal waer.......
* A sound fusion chip was not found

Also i found it says under device manager " This device is eather not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10)
A configuration problem ? or driver problem?
Appreciate any advice

Hi Antiman75...

I'd be glad to help you, but please start a new topic of your own. I almost overlooked you because you posted to a thread that had been resolved and had been romoved from my e-mail notification. I'll watch for your post or you may PM me when you start your topic.

Thanks...
