OK, I got the info you requested: the computer was bought with all preinstalled software. He never had any CDs, which is why he didn't give me any... :-(

How's it going with this last log?

is your destop still working normally? are you getting any popup ads? Let me know in your next reply with the scan results.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:

ok, I'm calling your system clean.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Thank you so very much... :)

However, I hate to tell you this, but I still seem to be having problems...

At least, "A" problem.

You didn't think you could be rid of me that fast, did you??? :tazz:

When reading my e-mail (I use outlook express - I know, you'll tell me it's really rotten... :) ), whenever I try opening a link, it freezes. Any link in any e-mail from anyone... :-(

I have no idea if it could be malware or spyware related... maybe you can tell me...

i'm not out to get rid of you that fast :tazz:
outlook express isn't a bad program, however just like Windows, and Windows explorer it is riddled with exploits that hackers and malware designers like to use.

launch IE, select Tools -> Internet Options -> click on the advanced tab, make sure outlook express is set as your default email program. if that is set do the next step.

Close OE. then open Internet Explorer. Now, click on Tools-> Internet options-> Programs-> Reset Web Settings, Uncheck "reset my home page", and then click YES.

if that doesn't work then please download linkfixer and install it.

let me know what happens

Good morning... :tazz:

I followed the first two instructions... it seems to be working.

So now, I guess you're really rid of me... even though it seems you want to keep me... hehe!

Thank you so very much for all your help.

I really appreciate it.

you can also remove all the extra programs I asked you to download for cleaning your system, once doing as much as possible above your computer will be more secure.
