Here is my HijackThis! log. I have run Adaware and the other programs mentioned -- I delete the things they find, but this keeps coming back. Norton AV is getting disabled during bootup, then enabled at the conclusion of the Windows StartUp sequence.

Here is the AdAware report for the scans over the past few days:

AdAware finds negligible cookies. Occasionally, while AdAware is running, Norton finds the following virus:

Date: 8/20/2005, Time: 12:42:26, Stephen Hines on HINES-LAPTOP
The compressed file InstallerApplet.class within C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen Hines\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\javainstaller.jar-3c936701-6052a9ef.zip is infected with the Trojan.ByteVerify virus.
The file was quarantined.

At startup, I get 1-4 error messages stating that Windows was clsoing the Windows Generic Processing host (or some such similar message). I believe that is the virus/trojan trying to download stuff and my firewall intercepting it.

After that last post, I had a lot of difficulty shutting down the system. I eventually killed the power.

When I turned it back on, TrojanGuard appeared in the bottom right portion of my screen with a red "X" on it, signifying it was disabled. Norton AntiVirus' cion did not have an "X" on it, but it said it was disabled when I moved my mouse over it. Both stayed that way for about thirty seconds, then went back to normal.

When I strated up Internet Explorer, my screen "blacked out" for a second, then reappeared.

Sigh.

Lets take care of those issues that your Ad aware finds.

1) Update Java. click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control panel. There will be an item "Java" with an icon like a coffee cup. Double click on it.

Click on Update tab and then click on Update now button.


2) MRU is "Most Recently Used". Windows compiles these lists so as to enable easy access to the recently used files. Mind you you have a list for each of the various programs installed on your PC like Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc. Also you have the overall Recent Documents (which is shown at Start ---> Documents).

Even if you delete them, they will get regenerated again. These lists are harmless.



Please delete the following files -

Installation date was 07/25/05. I did a search for that particular date -- the only thing "modified" on that particular date was "HijackThis!".

I also looked at the properties for the "process.exe" file. It is a "Command Line Process Utility" copyrighted in 2003 by Craig Peacock and listing "www.beyondlogic.org" as the company website. I am not familiar with the website and don't recall loading anything on or about that date. In fact, during that time period, I wasn't using my laptop all that much because the video cable was broken and I couldn't get any of our other monitors to work with the laptop on any but the lowest video resolution (something about the refresh rates that I never quite worked out).

I'll re-run AdAware and HijackThis! again in a minute and report the findings.

I have also noticed that the "screen blackout' I described earlier seems to be related to my trying to scroll up or down a web page, either by using the mouse wheel or by clicking and sliding the bar.

Yes -- When I scroll down in internet explorer or mozilla firefox, sometimes the computer freezes for several seconds, the screen blacks out, then refreshes.

I got the occasional virus warnings -- Trojen.Byteverify among them.

The computer also seems to be running a little more sluggishly than it used to -- plus the persistent tracking cookie and "Windows has stopped WinHost32 Generic Processing Service" messages I get when I turn on the computer.

1) The screen would be blanking out due to "lack of system resources". Sometimes when the CPU usage is high and the RAM is also fully taken up, you could have such errors.

2) To handle the "ByteVerify", Microsoft has got a patch. Once you get all the latest patches, it would also be taken care of.

3) Can you give me more information ?? "Winhost32 Generic Host Process" is a very general description and it is very difficult to pinpoint the issue.

To tackle cookies, delete cookies on a regular basis. It would also be a good idea to install a firewall to limit the unwanted internet traffic on your PC.

Any file running out of a temp folder raises suspicion !!!!! specially a Windows system file like svchost.exe.

You have to delete all the temp files on your PC.

Download CleanUp
Install the program, dont run it yet, we will use later.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode

Now run the CleanUp program:

*IMPORTANT NOTE*
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp

Running CleanUp

• Start CleanUp by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
• When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
• Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
• Now place a checkmark next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Delete Cookies
    This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
• Click OK
• Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
• When asked to reboot system select No
• Close CleanUp

Okay -- will do this evening when I get home. Also, the reason I am concerned about the system "freezing" and "blacking out" is that, well, it shouldn't given what I am running and my system specs. I'm running a 2.4 GHz Athlon processor with 512 MB Ram and 128 (or is it 256?) MB nVidia video card. The "lockups" occur during when I only have one or two windows opening. This rig should be able to handle that.

The only new background programs I have installed have been the ones recommended in the "LOOK HERE BEFORE YOU POST YOUR HIJACK THIS LOGS" -- and the lockups were occurring before I posted them.

I also noticed that, immediately after I get those error messages, Spybot SD (I think) tells me that it has accepted a change to the registry file. I am not sure why it is doing that, but it is troublesome.

The spybot "registry changed" notification comes up after the Windows Generic Process error messages in the prior posts.

I looked up the name of the file in the temp folder ("svchost.exe.mdmp"). It looks to me like it could be some version of the MSBlast worm. How do I get rid of that?
