Since the Online scans are getting no where, Lets try a different program.

Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
  • Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

To reboot into SafeMode with Windows XP, you can follow these steps from Microsoft:

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, start tapping press F8 key.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now open ewido and do a scan of your system.
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Reboot the PC in Normal Mode and post the Ewido scan report.

I am doing this now. I am running EWIDO with Norton Antivirus still installed and turned on. Log file momentarily.

**********************

Okay, running the program for the first time -- I did not get the error message you mentioned.

Updating now.

**********************

It says no update available. I have manually downloaded and installed the updates at your link above.

**********************

On to the next steps.

**********************

Okay, I had the option (in safe mode) of logging on as my normal self or as Administrator. I chose to log in as administrator.

Ewido found six issues. Here is the report:

The items are all quarantined. Should I have EWIDO eliminate them?

Lots and lots of lockups tonight. I'll run a couple of the spyware/adaware/antivirus programs tonight and see what comes up.

Also of note -- I just got a warning message that my C: drive is dangerously low on space.  It was a ten gigabyte HD partition -- and last time I checked, it had 2 GB open.  Now it is down to 350 MB.

. . . . . . .

Okay . . . I did a disk cleanup and have 1.3 GB of space

View Post

Okay, down to 156mb now and crashed computer. On reboot, at about 260 mb. What the heck is going on?

Just ran Windows cleanup to free up space, but it only found a few megabytes.

I just poked around the C:\ drive looking for obvious overloaded files or directories. Just deleted the hibernation file and picked up 500+ MB (I don't use hibernation). Now I have over a GB of space.

The windows folder contains 935 subfolders and eats up 5.05 GB (which seems high). The Windows uninstall files take up 500 MB of this space; MEMORY.DMP is here, 523 MB worth.

Program Files contains 9641 subfiles, but only takes up 1.76 GB of space. Odd. Would have thought it was bigger.

c:\windows\System32 is 2.63 GB in size. Seems large (though I really don't know whether this is too large or not).

Weird -- there are 24,311 files using extension *.TMP, with hexadecimal names running from 1A00.tmp through FFF.tmp. These files total 1.82 GB in size. What are they and are they meaningful?

Screen still blacking out (and programs freezing for a half second before blackout).

You can delete all the TMP files.

Other file count / folder sizes look ok.

Ran adaware, eliminated a few files (but cannot find logfile).

Ran Cleanup, CWShredder. Shredder found nothing.

Ran Ewido, eliminated three files:

I just induced 4 blackouts on this page alone -- I turned on Internet Explorer, then spun the mouse wheel back and forth a couple of times.

Yes. What do I need to do to protect data? Just export my Outlook files and my docs/photos to my D:\ partition and then format c:\?

Okay, reinstalled.

Interestingly, I did not have any problems with lockups until I installed WinXP SP2. I have since uninstalled SP2 and things seem to be working fine.

What do I do to protect from future infections?

Did you format and re-install Windows ???

You do not have any infections now (as per the HJT log).

If you have any issues then please do an online scan at Kaspersky and post back the scan report.

You should not have any issues on installing SP2. Infact SP2 is a critical update provided by Microsoft. It plugs a lot of security loopholes on your PC.

You should seriously consider installing SP2.
