fssm32.exe taking all CPU [resolved]

Hi this is my first post so I may be asking a stupid question in completely the wrong place, but please bear with me!

I'm running Windows 2000 and F-secure 5.41. Periodically (several times a day) my computer locks up and everything takes ages to run, even changing windows can take serval mins. A warning exclamation mark appears in my F-secure icon. When I go into task manager I see that a the file fssm32.exe is taking up 99% of my CPU and this seems to be what is blocking everything else. I have made sure that I have downloaded all the lastest window updates (toolpack 4). The only sollution is to turn off the computer and start again, however after 30mins or so the same things happens....very frustrating. I have run spy-bot S&D and I am clean, I also have a subscription to F-secure so I know my virus database is upto date.

Any ideas?

A bit more info might help.

I've run an on line virus check (panda) and an admail sweep (spybot with latest update). Here is the subsequent hijack this log file, is there anything odd?

Welcome to GTG Neil. Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. <_<

So far everything seems to be running perfectly, I worked all day yesterday with out a single "slow down". So I think you've cracked it !

Is there anything you would recommend to keep things under control? At the moment I run F-secure (with daily updates) and Spybot (about once a week). Is there any more I can do, or is this kind of thing just inevitable?

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.
