Hey guys. I've been a member all day and have been reading everyone elses problems because I was at work and not on my home computer where this [bleep] PSGuard has found it's way into my system.
Before I start.....I just want to say....you guys are amazing and really know your stuff. Any help you can give will be much appreciated...THANK YOU in advance.

OK...well

I got hit with this PSguard thing yesterday when i got home from work. My wife went out of town on business and left me with this nice gem to take care of. I've done everything you guys have suggested on your "before you post a hijack log" thread. I've done it all steps numerous times. Everything except Ewido because i'm running Windows 98SE and it states only for 2000 and XP only. Everytime I think it's gone....I re-boot and it all looks good until I launch Internet explorer...then i get that stupid (!) icon in the bottom right hand corner of my screen and the PSGuard program installs itself and starts running. I can CTRL + ALT + DEL and stop it, but it eventually restarts itself every so often.
Like I said....I've done all your steps a few times and STILL this [bleep] thing is popping up. I really wanted to solve this on my own, but i'm at my wits end and ready to fake an electrical fire on this box and claim it on my house insurance (j/k).

I just ran all the steps again and when i re-booted i didn't do a thing except CTRL + ALT + DEL the PSGuard program when it started. I then logged on to this site and did and ran hijackthis.
PLEASE help
Before you graciously give me any help.......be advised, I'm not the most computer savvy person. I can get around, but you'll need to have a little patience with me (Thanks)

Here is my log file..............

Booze Dude UPDATE:::::

OK guys......I realized my fist hijackthis scan was done with the file stored on the desktop. I have since moved as per instruction to my C: drive.
I have re-ran Adaware, spybot, Cwshredder in safe mode. All programs found and removed negligable items. I then re-booted in normal mode and re-ran all programs again. ALL programs were clear of bad stuff (for now).
Everything looks good so far.....PSguard has or did NOT start when i re-booted like previous re-boots. It looks ok on the surface........

Here is a current hijackthis scan. Please advise as to wether or not you see anything funny still. I have been battleing this Psguard thing for 24 hours now and need some sleep.

Current hijackthis scan..........

Hey guys............I joined with this problem a few days ago. I waited from Thursday until today for a reply. It looks like I got overlooked. I'm not try to bump anyone, but i figured if you didn't see my orginal thread by now...you weren't gonna see it.

Below is my origianl post and a few updates that i have added becuase I think I got rid of PSGuard alomg with other Malware from my computer.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Original Post Thursday August 18 2005

Booze Dude UPDATE:::::

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy
Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

THE FIX

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {daa873d4-958c-453c-81ca-3fe6f3676a87} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RJAA.DLL
O2 - BHO: Class - {C460249C-BE73-9D7B-DAA6-2381988C0497} - C:\WINDOWS\MSFB.DLL
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPGL32.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IPGL32.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NAVNet] "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\8051.TMP" /m
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard] C:\Program Files\PSGuard\PSGuard.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [D3BI32.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\D3BI32.EXE /s
O16 - DPF: {1D6711C8-7154-40BB-8380-3DEA45B69CBF} (Web P2P Installer) -

7. click the Fix Checked box

8. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\D3BI32.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IPGL32.EXE

9. Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

10. Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

11. Run the program CleanUp!

12. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

13. Please post the Active scan log, smitfiles.txt log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

We will fix that when we are done, which we are almost :tazz:

Just a few random bad files and folders to clean up.

Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Program Files\Common Files\SearchUpgrader
C:\Program Files\KaZaA
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\P2P Networking
C:\WINDOWS\browserxtras\pn

  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\smdat32m.sys
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "no".

Do that for the following files also, until you get to the last one, then click "yes" when HJT asks you to reboot.
C:\ms32.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\P2P Networking v126.cpl
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\oleext.dll

Post back when you finish and tell me how your computer is running :)

OK.....I've removed all files you have mentioned.
My computer seems to be running fine, but I haven't really done anything but open IE and come to this page. I'll play with it more today after work to make a better assesment, but for now it seems good.

Here is my new HJT log..........

OK that souds good. Let me know if there is any change.

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected
