On a side note, after my last reboot, Norton appears to still be running in auto-protect mode. Should it have auto started upon reboot or should it now be disabled altogether?

The advance tools has been stopped. OK let's see if we can make this pest let go.

Click here to download fixsurf.zip. Extract fixsurf.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop but don't run it yet.

With only HJT running, have it fix:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs.dll

Reboot to Safe Mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded. When done, double-click the fixsurf.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Find and delete:

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3 <-- folder

repairs.dll

Reboot to normal mode, rescan with HJT and post a new log.

It would not let me delete repairs.dll, it said this file was in use by another program. I also got another error when trying to delate the selected files with HJT. It was regarding the 020- AppInit_DLLs: repairs.dll line.

Here is the new HJT log:

Try this. Click here and download Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program. In the Killbox program, select the Replace on Reboot option. Put a checkmark in the Use dummy box Copy the file name below into the Full Path for File to Delete box:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\repairs.dll

Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt

Reboot to Safe Mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded. Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items, then click FIX CHECKED:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs.dll

Let me know and post a new HJT log.

I did as you said, this is what happened when I rebooted in safe mode upon loading:

Service.exe-bad image

The application or dll:c\windows\system32\repairs.dll is not a valid windows image, please check this against your installation diskette.

Then I ran HJT and checked the appropriate boxes and clicked "fix checked".

At that point this happened:

HJT: an unexpected error has occured at procedure: \modbackup_makebackup (system =020-appinit_dlls:repairs.dll) error number 5- invalid procedure call or argument.

Here is my new HJT log:

Interesting. With only HJT running have it fix:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll

Then delete this folder:

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3

Reboot, rescan with HJT and post your log here.

Seems better, browsed a couple sites, no pop ups. It does do something strange on reboot. Once it loads my desktop, I get a black screen for a second, hard drive makes a couple tick sounds then desktop comes back and loads toolbars etc. I dont remember it doing this brefore I got hit.

I plan on updated to service pack 2 as soon as we fix this malware. Any thoughts?

Do you see anything else that looks suspicious or am I clean? If I'm clean I probably need to go back and reset my Norton settings and such? Are there any other fix programs running in the background that I downloaded to cure this?

Go to Start->Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok. Scroll down and find the service called "Norton Unerase Protection". When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Automatic. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Just one last question - do you recognise the domains in your Trusted Zone (O15) - if so you are good to go.
