:tazz: I attempted to remove Internet Explorer from my windows 98 SE computer. Now when I boot the computer, it goes as normal until the taskbar starts coming up. About 5 seconds after the taskbar appears, it goes away. There is no desktop, only wallpaper. I ran scanreg /fix and then rebooted but no luck. What now? I cannot find my original Wndows98 CD.

HI I had a similar problem but it was in xp. when the task bar disappears press ctrl+alt+delete and Windows task manager should appear. Then click on file, New task (run). Then type explorer then go in to my computer then right click the hard drive, go to explore. after that go to Documents and Settings. then go to all users and then click on start menu, programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. then go back a few days. if it does not work or you don’t have system restore or the task messenger does not popup try booting up in safe mode by pressing F8.

Windows 98 has three options in Task Manager (End Task, Shut Down, Cancel) so I can't do that. I have also downloaded a bootdisk file to my old computer and created a boot disk for the messed up one. When I restart using the boot disk, I get "Invalid System Disk".

Do you have a "Windows" button on your keyboard? When pressed, it brings up the Start menu and taskbar. From there you can start working on getting your icons back. A possible solution may be to go to My Computer ----> Control Panel -----> Display ------> Effects. There should be a checkbox saying "Hide icons when viewed as a Web page", if that is checked, uncheck it and it will bring back your icons.

I tried the advice above, but my keyboard has a start button, so I hit that. Got an error message: "KERNEL32 caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE at 0003.000035f6"

To eliminate a couple of things, boot the PC and keep tapping F8 right after the beep until you get options, select command prompt only, type scanreg.exe /fix then press enter, it will run through a few screens then say registry repaired. Press enter then press ctrl + alt + delete keys together to reboot.

When it has loaded, click start, all programmes, accessories, system tools, system information, tools then run system file checker and replace any files it asks for from the 98SE CD.

Running these checks will rebuild the registry and replace missing system files

I've already tried everything listed as far as scanreg goes (fix, restore, etc.) with no help. Thanks anyway.

Sometimes the most simpliest answers solve the most complex questions. Can your taskbar possibly be lowered down by dragging-and-dropping. Go down to the bottom of your screen with your mouse and try to get an two-sided arrow. If you get one click and "drag" it to the top. It will give you your taskbar.
