I did all the steps that it says at the top of the forum and Avenue A, Inc, Double Click, and Yield Manager are the spware that showed up. No telling if there's more though.

I recently stopped using IE and switched to Mozilla Firefox thinking that would fix the problem, but obviously the spyware is still showing up. It's basically just slowing down my internet now.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

You have a mixture of malware that needs to be eradicated. You are also a little heavy in terms of protection which will slow your PC. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Please also disable PestPatrol, Ewido and SpySweeper for the same reason. Please note that when your PC has been declared clean, only one of the four antispyware programmes should be allowed to run in real-time; the other three should be used for “on demand” scanning only.

You also have mention in your log of Zone Alarm. This is fine so long as you have the Windows XP built-in firewall disabled. I have to admit that I have always found the Windows firewall to be excellent and Zone Alarm would therefore be superfluous, but you may have it for another reason. Please check by following this link http://www.grc.com/ and follow the trail for Shields Up.

To start please download the following programme, we will run it later. Please save it to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Please also disable PestPatrol, Ewido and SpySweeper for the same reason. Please note that when your PC has been declared clean, only one of the four antispyware programmes should be allowed to run in real-time; the other three should be used for “on demand” scanning only.

You also have mention in your log of Zone Alarm. This is fine so long as you have the Windows XP built-in firewall disabled. I have to admit that I have always found the Windows firewall to be excellent and Zone Alarm would therefore be superfluous, but you may have it for another reason. Please check by following this link http://www.grc.com/ and follow the trail for Shields Up.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Hi, thanks for replying to my topic so soon. No worries on messing anything up, I was actually going to just reformat before I came across this forum.

Yeah I do have a lot of protection right now as I’ve been trying to get rid of this junk, and I don’t know a whole lot about that kind of stuff. I just kept finding more stuff to try, so I would download it. Thanks for the info on all that. I didn’t have Zone Alarm for any particular reason, just didn’t know how good the Windows firewall was.

I ran the CCleaner after I checked the boxes on HijackThis and fixed them. I have run the cleaner before and it seems to get rid of stuff every time. Here’s the log I got after that.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.

The error message from Spybot appears to be a glitch of no real importance. If you check on your system you will find that both AV and FW are OK. However, I would recommend that you update Spybot, rescan and fix all items in red.

Thanks for your help... it seems to all be cleared up after running Spybot & Adaware. I have one more question that maybe you can answer.

Since I did all this stuff earlier, when I restart my computer 2 windows pop up at the start up. The first one says 'Windows cannot find 'four actual squares here' Make sure you typed the name corection and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button then click search.

Then there's another window that pops up and says 'Could not run 'four squares again' specified in registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the references to it in the registry.

When I go to run & msconfig I can see the file. The location says HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Windows:Load

I found the file in my registry, but is it ok to delete it? If not, do you know how I could fix it?

I hate to bother you again, but will you look at my hijackthis log and see if there's more stuff hiding? I still haven't gotten those error windows fixed, but it doesn't seem like anyone knows what it is. I thought maybe it's due to more spyware junk on here. I scanned Spybot yesterday and a new thing came up, DSO Exploit and it shows 5 registry keys.

Hello again Stacey

Firstly, I am sorry to hear that you didn't manage to find the reason for your start-up error, you might want to try a search for the programme its looking for and delete it. One of your system files (Win.ini perhaps) will have mention of it and that is why your PC looks for it, but not my area of expertise.

Your 5 DSO exploits is nothing to worry about. About a year ago, a patch was loaded to Spybot to stop that from happening, but I noticed a few weeks ago that they are back. Its just Windows and the way Spybot sees is. I'm sure Patrick will hear about it and correct it in a later patch.

Your log tells me that you have Ewido running in real-time, please disable the GUARD feature for the fix, or nothing will happen. Just one entry to fix.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

When you said "It changed" you were quite right.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

I hate asking people to do this but, in my opinion, this is the best scanner around. If there is a deep seated problem, this should find it.

Please download MWav to a convenient location.

This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
Please run MWav by double-clicking on mwav.exe.
