I have got hold of an Old Sont laptop which is working fine on XP but I can not find out how to see the whole desktop or any other screen for that matter without having to move the cursor around the screen.

Hi and welcome to Geeks to Go. Put our mouse pointer on the screen, right click and view properites, select settings. Adjust the screen resolution settings and see if that helps.
