I have been having problems with Aurora, abetterinternet, and winfixer 2005. I have tried to follow the instructions in the read this before posting section but have been running into problems completing them. I have run Microsoft adware several times, it continues to pick up the same issues and fix them. Ad-Aware also seems to fix the problems and then they are back again for the next scan. Spybot S & D runs about 1/2 through, finds an issue and then something causes my computer to shut down entirely prior to Spybot finishing. The same thing happened when I tried to run my virus scan program, TrojanHunter, and Ewido. In fact after running Ewido, I had to reboot my computer 5 times before it would stay running so I could send this plea for help!

Here is my Hijackthis log:

Hi alisonboo1 and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Please download Nailfix from Here
please do NOT run it yet.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

THE FIX

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on
Nailfix.exe on your desktop. Click next, then finished. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

5. Now open and run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

6. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

7. Open HiJack and do a scan.

8. Put a Check next to the following items:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - c:\windows\SvcProc.exe (file missing

9. click the Fix Checked box

10. Run the program CleanUp!

11. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

12. Please post an Active scan log , Ewido Scan log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Excal,
Thank you so much for the reply. Here is the current status:
I followed your steps and got through the Ewido scan. I did the next HiJack scan and fixed F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe but I was not able to locate the other item. I ran CleanUP! I then went into normal mode and attempted to run ActiveScan. About 15 minutes into it the computer shut down, it took me 3 times trying until it finally reboot. I attempted to run ActiveScan again and again, after about 15 minutes the computer shut down. I have now tried 8 times to have it reboot and stay running to no avail. I was able obtain another HiJack scan by booting up in Safe Mode and was able to download both that log and the Ewido log to a thumb drive. I am posting this message using the family desktop as I still have unsuccessfully kept my laptop running. Please advise what I should try next.

I appreciate all your help with this matter.

Try to get your computer up for just doing this! (you should be able to do this in safe mode, but try to do it quickly in Normal first)

To restore the backups:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on "View the list of Backups"
  • Place a check mark next to everything in that window
  • Click Restore
  • Click Yes
  • Reboot your computer
  • Run HiJackThis and post a new HiJackThis log for review.

Done. Actually, the last time I booted the laptop (when I was able to get the info off to post to you from the desktop) it actually stayed up an running. I didn't touch anything other then e-mail so I could easily watch for a reply rather than the long way through the desktop. I was able to perfom the latest tasks with out a problem.

Here is the new HiJack log.

New virus scan, same effect. About 1/2 way through the computer shuts down and it takes a few tries to bring back up. I went through this entire process twice and decided to stop short or fighting the computer back on for the evening. I did disable the screen saver today thinking it was crashing when the screen saver clicked on but it has crashed with it disabled. Sometimes I really hate computers!
:tazz:

Any suggestions?

How about this :tazz:

Please download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware for the Web Utility (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click the new icon on your desktop (tmas-web-scan.exe)
  • It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions".
  • Once the definitions are loaded, the program will appear to close then re-open.
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results"
  • Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
  • Click Exit.
Reboot your computer. In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them here.

It is not simply internet connectivity that is the problem. It is when ever I attempt to run a virus scan/spyware scan program. I noticed it from the first time I realized I had spyware/adware. I was able to run Ad Aware but the other programs listed in your "do this first section" would run about 1/2 through and then the computer would shut down. This one today was the first scan I managed to get all the way though on the first try.

Other than that the computer seems to be fine. It seems slow to boot up but that could be my imagination since I have had to boot it again and again lately. Once it is up and running, however, it seems I can accomplish my normal tasks with no problem.

I am almost afraid to run this one, its a long scan and if your computer is giving you problems running programs....ack.

Try it once please.

I need you to download MWav to a convenient location.

This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
I need you to run MWav by double-clicking on mwav.exe.
Put a check next to the below items before scanning:
  • Memory
  • Startup Folders
  • Drive - All Local Drives
  • Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
  • Registry
  • System Folders
  • Services
  • Include Sub-Directory
  • Scan All Files
Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the Scan button. This typically will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.

On the bottom portion of the window, you will see the lower panel where MWav is listing "infected items". When it's done scanning, please highlight everything in that lower panel and copy them by holding CTRL + C then paste it here. The whole log will be extremely BIG so there is no way to post the log. I just need the infected items list.

Don't copy and paste the lines from infected files that are present in quarantine, recovery or backupfolders from antispywarescanner (eg adaware, spybot s&d) or your virusscanner. Those I don't need.
I don't need the infected files/lines that are present in your System Volume Information-folder.
I just want all the other infected ones apart from those above.

Excal,
I'm back. I have been out of pocket awhile getting the kids ready to go back to school and I had several evening board meetings. I have been trying to run the suggested viurs scan. I know you said to try once but I had to leave to get the kids to a Dr. Appt, so I started it, when I returned, the computer was shut down. I then disconnected it from the internet connection and turned off all virus scan programs I have on automatic and ran it overnight. It shut down again. Same process on Thursday. Since I was not here while it was running, I wanted to try to run it once with me watching. I did that this morning. It ran for 2 hrs., scanned 74,000 files, found 23 viruses, 365 total errors, and then shut down before completion. I looked through the virus scan log while it was still running and saw these names listed: BigTrafficNet, Midnight Oil, Zipit Pro, and Aurora. I attempted to copy the virus log while it was still running but it wouldn't let me. (I was hoping that we could at least have something to look at prior to it shutting down).

Is there such a program that senses when virus scans are working and then shuts down the computer to avoid detection? That is almost what it seems like is happening.

Anyway, what suggestions do you have now. I'm hoping it's better than my uneducated thought of taking the laptop outside, putting it on the driveway and backing the car over it! :tazz: This is so frustrating. I guess this teaches me to never allow guests to use my computer. It was fine before we had British Soccer Coaches stay with us. :)

Thanks for your help (and moral support!)

Silent Runners:
  • Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

  • NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
For some time it will look like nothing is happening. Just keep waiting.
  • Once it's done it will create a log. A window will come up telling you when it's saved. Please post that log here
Download WinPFind and extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder.
don't do anything with it yet.

boot into safe mode

Inside c:\WinPFind is a file called WinPFind.exe. Double-click on this file to launch the program. Once it is launched, click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.

reboot

Please post the winpfind log

I followed the directions you provided. The Silent Runners log follows this. The WinPFind program ran (in safe mode) for approx. 15 minutes before the computer again simply shut down. I tried this excercise 3 times with the same result (I keep hoping that just once it will allow an entire program to run!)
