I'm running Windows 2000 and obtained the PSGuard infection. Went through a series of attempts to clean it by running AdawareSE, SpybotSD, TrojanHunter, and SmitRem/RunThis.bat. Tried to run the Ewiedo Security Suite, and was able to clean up some files, but the program started crashing when it scans the registry. I'm able to scan everything else, but not the registry.

My desktop is loading my IE Homepage, and the computer will suddenly start trying to log onto my DSL account.

Here is my HJT log:

hi tampabelle, thanks for responding.

Yes, sad to say I'm still having problems. I've dug down as deeply as I feel safe doing, and I'm stuck with the desktop hijack and the attempts to access the internet. Any help would be great.

Here is my latest HJT file:

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log and the contents of the smitfiles.txt log by using Add Reply.

Sorry about the delay in responding, but I have family evacuating from the hurricane.

I had previously run the corrections that you requested and both scans came up clean. I've run them again, and here are the results; however, unless I'm blind or completely brain dead, I cannot find the "autoclean" box that you told me to check for the Pandascan.

Hi,

Looks like Panda changed their default screen !!!!

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://software-dl.r...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

Reboot the PC and post a fresh HJT log

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as background.reg
Save as type:All files (The first line in the file should be REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop]
"NoChangingWallPaper"=-
"NoAddingComponents"=-
"NoComponents"=-
"NoDeletingComponents"=-
"NoEditingComponents"=-
"NoCloseDragDropBands"=-
"NoMovingBands"=-
"NoHTMLWallPaper"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoActiveDesktopChanges"=-
"NoActiveDesktop"=-
"NoSaveSettings"=-
"ClassicShell"=-
"NoThemesTab"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoActiveDesktopChanges"=-

Doubleclick the file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

Delete the file - C:\WINNT\sdkwb32.exe

Let me know of the progress

Your HJT log looks clean. Your Home page appears to be Panda Software website.

Is it possible that you may have set that page as your desktop ??

Can you try changing the desktop ??
Right click on your desktop (make sure that you dont click on any icons) and then click on Properties ---> Desktop ---> Browse. Now select the image that you want as your desktop.

Actually, the Active Desktop and Display Web Content boxes were checked. That seems to have cleared everything up.

I still can't run an Ewido scan, as it shows crashes when scanning my registry--but other than that I don't see any more symptoms.

Thanks for the help.

Lets us do some cleaning up.

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from here:
http://www.webroot.c...6d6f87b866d2848
(It's a 2 week trial)

Click the "Free Trial" link on the right - next to "SpySweeper for Home Computers".
On the next page, click the "Free Trial" button.
Download it and install it.
When you open the program, it will prompt you to update to the latest definitions.
Please do so, then click "Sweep Now"
Then click the "Start" button.
When it's done scanning, click the "Next" button.
Remove everything it finds, then save the log - copy the log and paste it here for me.
