WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Are you still getting notification of the PolyWin32 from McAfee? If so, does it list the file and location of it?

I have run webroot spysweeper, ewido, mcafee, and trojan hunter guard, and everything is seemingly ok.

Can all of these programs be run in unison or do i have to disable all of them and only pick one to continuously run?

Thanks for all of your help!

I will give you all of my recommendations on programs to remove/keep/download when we're finished :tazz:

Let's check one file first:

Please go here: Jotti Virus Scan

Click the "browse" button and locate this file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\aswBoot.exe

Click "Open", then click the "Submit" button. Copy the results and paste them here.

Disclaimer
This service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, I cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service.

Also, I am aware of the implications of a setup like this. I am sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). I am aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. I do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail me about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita.

Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware.

Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 15Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample.

Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following, if found:

MyWaySA (or MyWay)

Run HiJacKThis. Place a check next to these items and click FIX CHECKED:

These two were not on my hijackthis log. I did however fix:

and delete:

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA

I rebooted my computer and everything seems to be fine!

Great :tazz:

How old is McAfee?

You can delete the following:

remserv.bat
WinPFind

You can uninstall the following (unless you would like to keep them for the duration of the trials):

Trojan Hunter
WebRoot SpySweeper

I recommend keeping Ewido because after the 2 week trial, it goes to the freeware version which can still be updated and run as much as you want.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:

I recommend ALL of the programs I listed (only choose one firewall, though). Spywareguard offers great real-time protection against spyware installation attemps.

SpywareBlaster - update it first, then click "enable all protection" and that's it, you'll never know it's there (check for updates periodically)

Google toolbar is great at blocking pop-ups and MVPS Hosts keeps you from being directed to known spyware sites.

They will all work together great :tazz:

I highly recommend downloading one of the firewalls I listed above instead of using the Windows Firewall (if you choose to install one of those be sure to turn off the Windows firewall). Just my personal opinion, but I much prefer any firewall over the windows firewall :tazz:
